Overview

Snipe-IT brings equipment and software-license tracking together, with barcode scanning for physical inventory and employee self-service for staff participation. Unlimited users and assets remove two common scaling constraints, while the JSON REST API supports integrations and automation. This combination suits teams that need a broad inventory system without a growing seat bill, though API quotas matter for automation-heavy use.

Organizations can host the open-source product themselves or use a hosted account. Self-hosting costs nothing but puts deployment and operation in the organization’s hands. Hosted plans include TLS/SSL certificates, a 99.99% uptime guarantee and cloud data storage in the region selected at signup. Security practices include bcrypt, brute-force prevention, password security, two-factor authentication and HTTPS-only cookies. Releases arrive every few weeks, with fixes and features shipping daily.

Key features

Asset and license tracking: Track physical assets and software licenses in one product. Barcode scanning supports inventory workflows, making the system more relevant to teams handling equipment than to buyers seeking only software-license administration.
Employee self-service: Staff can take part in asset management instead of routing every interaction through an administrator.
REST API: The JSON API can connect Snipe-IT to other systems or automate work, but hosted entry tiers cap usage at 120 or 240 calls per minute.
Security and hosting choices: Self-hosting offers control and a free license; hosted service adds certificates, regional cloud storage and a stated uptime guarantee. Higher hosting tiers include options such as IP restrictions and private servers.

Pricing

The self-hosted plan is free forever, with unlimited users and assets and 120 API calls per minute. It is the clearest fit for organizations able to run their own deployment. Hosted plans are billed monthly or annually, with annual savings.

Plan	Price	What it includes	Best suited to
Self-Hosted	Custom pricing	Host it yourself; unlimited users and assets; 120 API calls per minute	Teams that want a free, self-managed deployment
Basic Hosting	39.99 USD per month	Hosted account; unlimited users and assets; 120 API calls per minute	Organizations that want managed hosting with modest API needs
Small Business Hosting	99.99 USD per month	Hosted account; unlimited users and assets; 240 API calls per minute	Teams needing more API capacity than Basic provides
Dedicated Hosting (small)	249.99 USD per month	Dedicated hosting; unlimited users and assets	Organizations preferring dedicated hosting
Medium Dedicated Hosting	5000.00 USD per year	Medium dedicated offering	Organizations seeking a larger dedicated deployment
Large Dedicated Hosting	7500.00 USD per year	Large dedicated offering	Organizations seeking a larger dedicated deployment

Hosted plans add email support to community support; phone and API assistance require enterprise support. No trial or refund policy is stated, so buyers should confirm terms before committing. Unlimited users do not mean unlimited API throughput: Basic Hosting retains the same 120-calls-per-minute quota as self-hosting.

Platforms

Snipe-IT is available as self-hosted software or through hosted accounts, giving organizations a choice between operating it themselves and using managed cloud infrastructure. The cloud platform keeps data in the region selected at signup; self-hosted deployments do not include the hosted plans’ TLS/SSL certificates.

Who it's for

Snipe-IT is a strong fit for IT teams that need to track both equipment and software licenses, want staff self-service, and value unlimited user and asset counts. Its free self-hosted option works especially well for organizations with the capacity to manage deployment. Buyers who prefer managed service can start at 39.99 USD per month, while teams with higher API demand or dedicated infrastructure needs should weigh the more expensive tiers.

It is less suitable for organizations that require phone or API support without enterprise support, or that need a hosted plan with more API calls than the published entry tiers allow.

Pros and cons

Pro: Unlimited users and assets across the listed plans avoid per-seat and per-item scaling costs.
Pro: Free self-hosting gives capable teams a no-subscription route to asset and license tracking.
Pro: Barcode scanning, employee self-service and a REST API cover physical inventory, staff participation and integrations in one system.
Con: Self-hosting shifts deployment responsibility to the organization and does not include hosted TLS/SSL certificates.
Con: API usage is capped at 120 calls per minute on self-hosting and Basic Hosting, and 240 on Small Business Hosting.
Con: Phone and API support require enterprise support, limiting the support channels available on standard hosted plans.

Verdict

Choose Snipe-IT if your organization wants asset and software-license tracking with barcode scanning, employee self-service and no user or asset caps—and can either operate a free self-hosted deployment or pay for managed hosting. Look elsewhere if the API quotas or standard support limits do not fit your requirements, or if you need a different deployment or pricing model.
