Overview

Arm Keil MDK is an embedded development environment for software targeting Arm Cortex-M and Ethos-U processors. It suits teams building for those targets who want a choice of IDE or command-line workflows and device resources they can add as needed. Its breadth is a strength, but host constraints and the cost of commercial editions deserve attention before settling on it.

Key features

Flexible development and target support

MDK v6 brings together Keil Studio extensions for Visual Studio Code, Keil μVision, Arm Compiler for Embedded, and Arm Fixed Virtual Platform models. Developers can work in an IDE or use the command line, including in continuous integration workflows. Keil Studio supports CMSIS workflows and includes an integrated debugger and extensions to create, build, and test embedded applications. μVision is a useful second IDE option, but it runs on Windows hosts only; teams standardizing on Linux or macOS should plan around that limitation.

Software packs can be added independently of the toolchain, providing device and board support, software components, middleware, code templates, and example projects. That modular approach can keep a workflow focused on the target and components it needs. Supported targets include Arm Cortex-M, Armv8-M, SecurCore and legacy Arm microcontrollers, Ethos-U processors, and Fast Models.

Debugging, middleware, and safety

Integrated debugging and flashing, hardware probe support, and RTOS support make MDK relevant to embedded workflows that extend beyond compiling. Its listed integrations include CMSIS-FreeRTOS, Keil RTX5, MDK-Middleware, IoT clients, CMSIS-DAP, ULink, and third-party debug adapters. The MDK-Middleware Network component uses Arm Mbed TLS to secure TCP/IP communication, a focused security benefit for networked projects rather than a substitute for broader product security planning.

The Professional edition adds Arm Compiler for Embedded FuSa, a FuSa C library, and a functional safety run-time system. Those additions make it the more relevant paid tier for projects needing those safety-oriented components, though they come at a substantial premium over Essential.

Pricing

Keil MDK is freemium, with a Community plan for non-commercial use that includes Keil Studio, Keil μVision, and Cortex-M device support. Its price is custom pricing. That makes it a sensible starting point for non-commercial Cortex-M work, but its stated scope does not promise the commercial-use terms or broader features of the paid v6 plans.

Essential is custom pricing and includes one license per user. For commercial use, Keil MDK v6 Essential costs 99.00 USD per month, billed $99.00/ month per license. It covers all Cortex-M cores, μVision, VS Code Extensions, and API access, making it the clearer fit for commercial Cortex-M teams that need both IDE options and API access without Professional's safety and legacy-tool additions.

Professional is custom pricing and includes one license per user. Keil MDK v6 Professional costs 199.00 USD per month, billed $199.00/ month per license. It includes Essential, Arm Virtual Hardware, Arm Compiler for Embedded FuSa, and legacy tools including Arm Compiler 5. Choose it when those additions matter to the project; otherwise Essential costs less while covering the listed commercial Cortex-M workflow. Both v6 prices are per license, so account for each user's seat.

Platforms

MDK supports Linux, macOS, and Windows desktop platforms, as well as API, extension, and web platform categories. The cross-platform IDE and CLI options broaden its reach, but μVision's Windows-only availability can be a deciding drawback for teams that require that IDE on other hosts.

Who it's for

Keil MDK is best suited to developers and teams building for Arm Cortex-M or Ethos-U who value a broad target range, modular software packs, and both IDE and CLI workflows. Community can serve non-commercial Cortex-M work; commercial teams can choose between Essential's core toolchain and Professional's virtual hardware, FuSa, and legacy-tool additions. It is a poorer fit when a project does not target its supported processors or depends on μVision from a non-Windows host.

Support includes support cases, a community forum, documentation, and learning videos. Those channels complement the product's extensive toolset, particularly for teams adopting its multiple development paths.

Pros and cons

Pros: IDE and CLI workflows, including continuous integration, give teams flexibility in how they build.
Pros: Independently addable packs provide target support and reusable components without requiring every resource to be part of the toolchain.
Pros: Integrated debugging and flashing, RTOS support, and hardware probe support address several core embedded-development needs.
Cons: μVision is Windows-only, which limits its usefulness for teams whose standard hosts are Linux or macOS.
Cons: The commercial v6 plans are priced per license per month, and Professional's $199 monthly rate is twice Essential's $99 rate.
Cons: The Community plan is restricted to non-commercial use and Cortex-M device support, so it is not a substitute for a commercial license.

Alternatives

For projects targeting other microcontroller ecosystems or seeking a free IDE, these alternatives may be a better match:

C2000Ware is a free download for C2000 microcontrollers; choose it when that target family is the priority, noting that its installer requires export approval.
CS+ offers a free IDE for development and production, though an evaluation compiler has limits; consider it when that free IDE model suits your workflow.
ESP-IDF Extension for VS Code is a free VS Code extension for ESP-IDF, suited to developers centered on that environment.
MPLAB X IDE is a free IDE supporting most Microchip microcontrollers and digital signal controllers; choose it for those targets.
nRF Connect for VS Code is a free IDE extension for nRF C, a narrower choice for that toolchain.
PlatformIO IDE has a free Community plan with forum and documentation access; it may suit developers looking for that free offering.
Arduino IDE is a free, open-source IDE with autocompletion, code navigation, and live debugging; consider it for an open-source IDE with those capabilities.
Eclipse IDE is free and open source, an alternative for readers seeking an open-source IDE.

Verdict

Choose Arm Keil MDK if you are developing for its Arm microcontroller and Ethos-U targets and want one environment spanning IDE, command line, debugging, flashing, and optional software packs. Its strongest case is the combination of target breadth and workflow flexibility; its clearest reasons to look elsewhere are the Windows-only μVision constraint and the recurring per-license cost of commercial v6 plans.
