Overview

Apache Cassandra is a free, open-source NoSQL database for teams managing mission-critical data and large active datasets. It is best suited to operators who want to run a distributed database themselves and control how it scales and handles consistency. Its masterless architecture and flexible deployment options are compelling, but the self-managed model makes it a less natural fit for teams seeking a service that handles operations for them.

Every node can provide the same functionality, rather than relying on a designated master. Cassandra supports horizontal scaling, with the project saying read and write throughput increase linearly as machines are added, without downtime or application interruption. That is an attractive design for growing workloads, though it does not remove the responsibility of managing the deployment.

It can run on premises, with one cloud provider, across multiple providers, or in a mix of environments. Replication across data centers and tunable consistency levels let operators choose how data is distributed and how queries balance consistency. Key features

Masterless architecture: Any node can provide the same functionality. This avoids a designated master role, a useful property for distributed deployments.
Horizontal scaling: The project describes read and write throughput as increasing linearly with added machines, without downtime or application interruption. That claim makes Cassandra worth considering when capacity needs to grow without planned service interruption.
Replication and tunable consistency: Cassandra supports replication across multiple data centers and configurable consistency levels for queries. Operators can shape distribution and query behavior to suit their systems.
Operational tooling: Audit logging covers DML, DDL, and DCL activity, while fqltool can capture and replay production workloads. These features give operators tools for audit and workload analysis.
Integration and drivers: The ecosystem includes connectors and tools for Apache Kafka, Apache Flink, Apache Spark, and Kubernetes. Drivers are available for Java, Go, Python, and Node.js.
Deployment choices: Tarballs and packages are provided, with Debian and RPM installation documented. Cassandra can be deployed on premises, in a single cloud, across multiple clouds, or in a combination.
Transactions: Cassandra supports transactions alongside tunable consistency and multi-region deployment.

Pricing

Cassandra costs 0.00 USD per free. The open-source database is self-managed, so there is no paid Cassandra plan to compare; the trade-off for the zero price is that operators run and manage the deployment themselves.

The project identifies version 5.0 as its latest GA release and says it is maintained until the 8.0 release. Third-party tools, products, projects, and services in the ecosystem are not supported by the Cassandra community, so teams should distinguish community support for Cassandra from support offered by those providers.

Platforms

Cassandra supports Linux, macOS, Windows, web, and self-hosted environments. The range of deployment options suits organizations that need control over where their database runs, including across multiple cloud providers. Installation packages and documented Debian and RPM paths give Linux operators concrete setup options.

Who it's for

Cassandra is a strong candidate for teams with large active datasets, mission-critical workloads, and the operational capacity to manage a distributed database. Its masterless design, horizontal scaling, multi-data-center replication, and tunable consistency are relevant when workloads span machines or regions.

It is less suitable for buyers who want a managed database service or prefer not to own deployment and operations. Teams relying on ecosystem integrations should also account for the fact that third-party projects and services are not supported by the Cassandra community.

Pros and cons

Pro: Masterless architecture lets every node provide the same functionality, avoiding reliance on a designated master.
Pro: The project says throughput scales linearly with added machines without downtime or application interruption, supporting capacity growth.
Pro: Multi-data-center replication and tunable consistency give operators control over distribution and query behavior.
Pro: It is free and open source, with drivers for four languages and integrations spanning Kafka, Flink, Spark, and Kubernetes.
Con: Cassandra is self-managed, so the cost-free plan does not spare teams from operating their deployment.
Con: The Cassandra community does not support the third-party ecosystem projects, tools, products, and services it lists.

Alternatives

Choose Apache HBase if you want a free, open-source distributed database whose operators configure and manage deployments. SWC-DB is another free, self-hosted option; its GPLv3 license warrants attention for commercial uses limited by that license.

Baidu Tera and Elassandra are free alternatives with API and self-hosted platform support; Baidu Tera is also listed for API use, while Elassandra is listed for Linux. Consider HPE Ezmeral Data Fabric for a paid option with a free plan and trial; the Canada store shows “Starting at C$500.00” for its one- to five-year E-LTU offerings, with pricing varying by reseller.

Amazon Keyspaces is a paid alternative with a free plan and API and web platforms; its on-demand capacity plan charges for reads and writes performed and adjusts capacity to application traffic. Cloudera Data Lake Service is a paid API and web option without a free plan. For enterprise clusters, ScyllaDB Manager uses custom licensing.

Verdict

Choose Apache Cassandra if you need a free, self-managed distributed database for large active or mission-critical data and value masterless operation, horizontal scaling, and control over replication and consistency. Look elsewhere if you need a managed service or community support for the third-party tools your deployment depends on.
