Overview

Prismic brings structured content, developer tools, and visual editing together without replacing a team's existing stack. Its Visual Page Builder supports live editing, drag-and-drop layouts, and reusable slices, letting editors make page changes within structures developers define. Slice Machine supports visual content modeling, code snippets, one-click syncs, automatic TypeScript, and generated component structure. That division suits teams that want editorial flexibility without handing over implementation control.

Localization, previews, revision history, rollback, webhooks, custom content types, and editorial workflows support ongoing publishing. Imgix integration compresses and optimizes images on the fly, and pages include schema support for Google Search and AI discovery engines. The Migration API supports large-scale replatforming and structured content migrations. Prismic also connects to Claude, ChatGPT, and other MCP-enabled AI tools.

Prismic says it powers more than 70 million pages across 90-plus countries on over 10,000 websites, and that more than 4,800 marketers use it. Its API can be configured as private and require client authentication. Services and customer data are hosted on AWS in us-east-1; the company lists AWS certifications including ISO/IEC 27001, SOC 1, SOC 2, and SOC 3.

Key features

Page editing and developer tools

The page builder's live editing and reusable slices give marketers a way to shape pages, while Slice Machine helps developers turn content models into code and component structure. This is a practical fit for teams sharing responsibility between engineering and editorial staff. The framework integrations and official SDKs are for Next.js, Nuxt, and SvelteKit, so teams outside that set should weigh the framework fit before committing.

Content operations

Previews, full revision history, and rollback help teams review changes and recover earlier content. Localization, webhooks, and the Migration API support multilingual publishing, integrations, and larger migrations. Built-in Imgix optimization reduces the need to handle image compression separately, while schema support covers search and AI discovery.

Pricing

Prismic is freemium, with paid plans billed annually per repository and changes taking effect at the next renewal cycle. Plans can be upgraded or downgraded. The 30-day trial offers a way to assess paid use before committing.

Free: 0.00 USD per free, billed Per repository. It includes 1 user, 4 million API calls/month, 100 GB CDN bandwidth/month, 2 locales, and unlimited documents, types, and assets. It suits personal websites and proofs of concept. There are no overages; exceeding the bandwidth allowance automatically locks the project, so it is not a safe choice for traffic that may outgrow the cap.
Starter: 10.00 USD per month, billed Per repository, annually. It raises the seat limit to 3 and locales to 3, with 4 million API calls/month and 100 GB CDN bandwidth/month. Paid bandwidth overages are available up to 500 GB at $0.30/GB. It fits a small team investing in a custom-branded website, but gives up the free plan's no-overage protection.
Small: 25.00 USD per month, billed Per repository, annually. It allows 7 users and 4 locales, with the same 4 million API calls/month and 100 GB CDN bandwidth/month as Starter. Bandwidth overages are available up to 500 GB at $0.30/GB. This is the more relevant step for a team publishing more and needing additional seats, rather than a major increase in usage capacity.
Medium: 150.00 USD per month, billed Per repository, annually. It includes 25 users, 5 million API calls/month with no overages, 500 GB CDN bandwidth/month, bandwidth overages up to 1 TB at $0.30/GB, 5 locales, and user roles. It suits teams scaling content who need more room and role controls.
Platinum: 675.00 USD per month, billed Per repository, annually. It includes unlimited users, 10 million API calls/month, API overages up to 20 million on yearly invoiced plans, 1 TB CDN bandwidth/month, and bandwidth overages up to 5 TB at $0.30/GB. It targets companies continuously adding website features; the larger quotas and unlimited seats come at a substantial jump from Medium.
Enterprise: custom pricing, billed Per repository, annually. It includes custom usage quotas, 2 development environments, backups, custom roles, a Customer Success Manager, SSO, InfoSec and legal review, support and uptime SLAs, and priority or premium support options. It is aimed at large companies that need stronger security and support commitments, rather than teams looking for a predictable published price.

Basic support provides Community Forum access. Enterprise adds priority or premium support options. The free plan's one-seat limit is the clearest early constraint for teams; paid bandwidth overages provide a growth path on several plans, but the free plan locks a project instead of charging for excess traffic.

Platforms

Prismic is available via API and web. Its official SDKs and integrations support Next.js, Nuxt, and SvelteKit.

Who it's for

Prismic suits developers building in its supported frameworks who want structured content and a publishing workflow editors can use without requiring a developer for every page adjustment. The free plan is best for a personal site or proof of concept with a single user. Teams that need more collaborators, locales, or traffic capacity can move to paid plans, while large organizations can consider Enterprise for SSO, backups, custom roles, and security and support options. It is less suitable for teams that need a broader choice of frameworks or a free project that can exceed its bandwidth cap without being locked.

Pros and cons

Pro: The visual page builder and reusable slices let editors assemble pages within developer-defined structures.
Pro: Slice Machine generates TypeScript and component scaffolding, supporting a closer connection between content modeling and implementation.
Pro: Previews, revision history, rollback, localization, and webhooks cover several core needs of ongoing editorial operations.
Con: The free plan permits only one user, limiting collaboration even though it allows unlimited documents, types, and assets.
Con: The free plan locks a project when it exceeds 100 GB monthly CDN bandwidth rather than allowing overages.
Con: Starter and Small retain the same 4 million API calls and 100 GB monthly bandwidth as Free, so their main gains are seats, locales, and paid bandwidth overages.
Con: Published framework support centers on Next.js, Nuxt, and SvelteKit, which narrows the fit for teams using other frameworks.

Alternatives

Headless CMS and Content Management Systems directories can help compare a broader field of products.

Sanity is worth considering if its Free plan's 20 user seats, 2 permission roles, and 2 public datasets better suit an individual or smaller project.
Directus offers a free Core plan with 3 user seats, 25 collections, and 5 flows; consider it if those limits match your project.
dotCMS is another freemium option, with a Starter plan offering unlimited users and roles plus development and production environments.
Storyblok has a free Starter plan for testing and personal projects, with one space, one user seat, and 100 GB traffic.
ButterCMS is an alternative for freelancers and developers launching smaller projects or MVPs; its Free plan includes 50K API calls/month and 100 GB/month.
Contentful may fit teams whose free-tier priorities are 10 users, 2 roles, and 2 locales, with 100K API calls/month and 50 GB/month CDN bandwidth.
DatoCMS offers a free plan with 3 projects, one collaborator per project, 300 records, 10GB/month bandwidth, and 100k CDA API calls/month with no overages.
Cloud CMS is another option if a free Developer Edition or its $220.00 USD per month Starter plan is a closer fit.

Verdict

Choose Prismic if your team builds in Next.js, Nuxt, or SvelteKit and wants marketers to shape pages while developers retain control of structured content and implementation. Its editor-development workflow is the central reason to choose it. Look elsewhere if the framework fit is wrong, or if a shared free project must tolerate traffic beyond 100 GB monthly bandwidth without locking.
