Overview

Koala Sampler is a sample-based beat-making app for recording sounds with a device microphone or importing audio, then sequencing it into tracks. It suits producers who want to turn found or recorded sounds into beats across mobile and desktop platforms. Its appeal is a compact sampling-to-export workflow; look elsewhere if desktop plugin hosting or a larger sample capacity is essential.

Key features

Koala can record up to 64 samples and combines them with a high-resolution sequencer, keyboard mode, quantization and swing. That is a useful set for shaping short beat-making sessions without leaving the sampler, though the 64-sample ceiling may constrain projects that depend on larger collections.

Projects export as WAV loops or tracks, and iOS also supports Ableton Live Set export. MIDI control and Ableton Link support external control and Wi-Fi jamming, giving Koala ways to fit into connected music setups rather than keeping every part of a session inside the app.

The Samurai in-app purchase adds time-stretch algorithms, a piano roll, auto-chop, three-band EQ, a polyphonic synth and MIDI output. It is the more substantial expansion for users who want deeper sample editing and sequencing. Mixer adds four channels and a main bus, with five effect slots per channel, and provides external plugin hosting on iOS, Mac and Windows. Android users do not get that hosting, so Mixer is less compelling there if plugin integration is the reason to buy it.

Sample packs bought in-app can be used royalty-free in music creation, but cannot be resold, redistributed or included in other sample packs or products.

Pricing

Koala uses a freemium model, but the core app’s terms vary by platform. The iOS version costs 4.99 USD per once as a one-time App Store purchase for iPhone and iPad; in-app purchases are sold separately. That is the clearest paid entry point for mobile users, but Samurai and Mixer are additional purchases.

Desktop versions for Mac, Windows, Linux and Raspberry Pi are 0.00 USD per free for now. The Windows build is in beta, so Windows users should weigh that qualification against the no-cost entry. The separate desktop plugin has a 0.00 USD per free billed 7-day trial per computer; after the trial it stops working until a licence is purchased. A licence is for one person and can be active on up to three computers at once.

Desktop plugin checkout is processed by Paddle, which collects payment details; Koala Sampler says it does not see card numbers. The desktop plugin sends computer information to track active licence computers, while projects and audio remain on the computer according to the maker. The iOS and Android apps do not require an account and do not send projects or audio to the maker; microphone, file and photo permissions stay on the device.

Platforms

Koala is offered for Android, iOS, Linux, macOS and Windows. The maker also offers Raspberry Pi desktop versions for free for now. External plugin hosting is supported on iOS, Mac and Windows, but not Android; iOS additionally has Ableton Live Set export. The Windows desktop build is in beta.

Support resources include a help knowledge base, manual, learning resources and a contact route. No specific desktop-plugin response time is promised, so users who need a defined support turnaround should take that into account.

Who it's for

Koala is a good fit for beat-makers who want to capture or import sounds, sequence them, add effects and export finished loops or tracks. iOS users get both the one-time app purchase and Ableton Live Set export, while desktop users can start with free builds. Android users can access the sampling workflow, but should not choose Koala specifically for external plugin hosting.

It is a weaker fit for producers who need more than 64 samples in a project, plugin hosting on Android, or desktop plugin use without a paid licence after the seven-day trial.

Pros and cons

Pros: Recording and importing sit alongside sequencing tools, so users can build beats from sampled material in one app.
Pros: WAV export, iOS Ableton Live Set export, MIDI control and Ableton Link give projects several routes into other workflows.
Pros: Free desktop builds make it possible to start on Mac, Linux or Raspberry Pi without an app purchase; the Windows build is also free for now, though in beta.
Cons: The 64-sample limit may be tight for larger sample-heavy projects.
Cons: Plugin hosting depends on platform and is unavailable on Android; the desktop plugin also stops working after its seven-day trial unless licensed.
Cons: Samurai and Mixer are separate in-app purchases, so the expanded tools add to the iOS app’s upfront cost.

Alternatives

For another free beat-making option, MPC Beats is available for macOS and Windows. DAWG is a $5.00 USD or more one-time option for Android, Linux, macOS and Windows; its maker also develops Unity tools.

Serato Studio offers a free tier with one audio track, four decks and four scenes, plus limited recording and selected sound packs; choose it if those stated limits suit your workflow, or consider its paid plan at 149. For other options, compare MilkyTracker, Auxy Studio, Drum Pads 24, Endlesss and Remixlive.

Verdict

Choose Koala Sampler if you want a focused way to record or import sounds, turn them into sequenced beats and export across mobile or desktop workflows. Its strongest reason to choose it is the combination of sampling, sequencing, MIDI and practical export options, with free desktop builds lowering the entry cost. Look elsewhere if your projects need more than 64 samples, Android plugin hosting, or continued desktop-plugin use without a licence.
