Overview

Fleet is an endpoint management platform for IT and security teams that need to oversee a mixed device estate, especially in enterprise settings. Its strongest case is the breadth of inventory, patching, security, and compliance controls in one platform; the trade-off is that support and managed-cloud eligibility differ sharply by plan.

Key features

Live inventory and compliance

Fleet keeps a live connection to managed devices and turns it into reports and audit logs, a useful advantage when teams need current visibility rather than occasional inventory snapshots. It can check devices against CIS benchmarks, SOC 2, ISO, or an organization's own baselines. That makes Fleet relevant to teams monitoring several standards, though the checks do not replace the work of defining and maintaining those standards.

Software management and remediation

A Fleet-maintained app catalog, approved software self-service, and automatic remediation for noncompliant devices connect software deployment with ongoing device upkeep. This can reduce manual follow-up for IT teams, while the emphasis on approved software gives organizations a way to channel user requests through controlled options.

Security controls and automation

Fleet can enforce FileVault, BitLocker, and LUKS2 encryption, and remotely lock or wipe devices. Custom workflows can use its REST API, webhook events, and fleetctl command-line tool, with integrations including Okta, Active Directory, Jira, GitHub, GitLab, Splunk, and CrowdStrike. These controls and connections suit teams that want endpoint management to fit existing security and IT processes; the number of integration options alone does not establish how much setup any one connection requires.

Deployment flexibility

Fleet can run on-premises, in the cloud, or in air-gapped environments. Self-hosting is offered on both Free and Premium, which gives organizations with deployment constraints a path that does not depend on managed cloud. Fleet also links to a SOC 2 Type 2 trust resource.

Pricing

Fleet uses a freemium model. Free costs 0.00 USD per free, billed monthly, and includes basic features with no support. It is the clearest fit for teams willing to self-host and rely on the open-source issue tracker and community Slack rather than paid assistance. Fleet says its source code is public and that the free version will always be free.

Premium costs 7.00 USD per month, billed at $7.00 per host per month. It adds unlimited confidential email support, plus phone and video call support, while retaining self-hosting as an option. Managed cloud is currently available only to customers with 700+ hosts, so smaller organizations considering a hosted deployment should not assume this plan is available to them.

Custom pricing is available for teams that can move quickly with large deployments. Fleet does not provide a fixed price for this plan, so it is best suited to buyers prepared to discuss their deployment directly with sales. The Free plan's stated terms do not give a device cap; Premium is priced per host, making fleet size central to its cost.

Platforms

Fleet supports macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, iPadOS, Android, and ChromeOS devices. Its listed software platforms also include API, web, and self-hosted options. That coverage makes it a plausible fit for organizations managing more than one desktop or mobile ecosystem, rather than a tool confined to Apple devices.

Who it's for

Fleet is best suited to enterprise IT and security teams that want device inventory, software upkeep, encryption controls, remote actions, and live compliance checks together. It is also a strong candidate for organizations that need self-hosted or air-gapped deployment. Teams that need a fully managed cloud service below 700 hosts, or dependable vendor support without a paid plan, should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad support across desktop, mobile, and ChromeOS devices makes Fleet useful for mixed endpoint estates.
Pros: Live inventory, audit logs, benchmark checks, and automated remediation combine visibility with practical response options.
Pros: On-premises, cloud, self-hosted, and air-gapped deployment options serve organizations with differing infrastructure needs.
Pros: Free is permanently free according to Fleet, and Premium adds several support channels.
Cons: Free includes no support beyond the issue tracker and community Slack, which may not suit teams that need direct vendor help.
Cons: Managed cloud has a 700-host minimum, excluding smaller teams from that deployment option.
Cons: Premium's per-host billing can make the monthly total rise with a large fleet.

Alternatives

FileWave is worth comparing for buyers who want a free community edition capped at 15 computers, 15 tablets, and 15 Chrome devices, or who value its free trial.

Relution may suit a smaller deployment: its free plan supports up to five devices, with shared cloud or on-premises hosting and unlimited duration.

SureAsset is a free alternative focused on asset lifecycle management, hardware and software license tracking, and API access with automation.

ManageEngine Mobile Device Manager Plus is a candidate for teams seeking a free, fully featured Professional edition capped at 25 devices, with a free trial also offered.

Mosyle Manager is a more Apple-focused option: its free plan has no device-count limit and can be configured for iOS/iPadOS or macOS.

AppTec360 Enterprise Mobility Management is another option to compare for mobile-management needs, with a free plan and a paid kiosk package priced at 49.00 EUR per month per device.

Lightspeed Classroom is an alternative to consider for classroom software needs.

LogMeIn Resolve IT Asset Management is another freemium alternative to compare for IT asset management.

Verdict

Choose Fleet if your IT or security team wants cross-platform endpoint visibility, software management, and live compliance controls, particularly with self-hosted or air-gapped deployment. Its permanent free option makes a capable starting point for teams able to go without direct support; look elsewhere if you need managed cloud below 700 hosts or vendor support without paying per host.
