Overview

Animation, rigging, physics-based tools, inbetweening, and animation unbaking are all included in Free. That makes Cascadeur a substantial place to learn its workflow or create personal work, rather than a stripped-down preview. The boundary is consequential: Free is non-commercial, and projects can only be exported in CASC format.

Cascadeur is for making character animation, not capturing it. Its Root Motion Tool, introduced in Cascadeur 2026.1, uses motion signatures from reference animation to transfer motion style, giving animators an AI-assisted way to shape movement.

Key features

Animation and rigging: The core tools are available without a subscription, a strong fit for learning and non-commercial projects. Commercial work requires a paid plan.
Export and integrations: Paid plans support CASC, FBX, DAE (Collada), USD, and GLTF/GLB; Free is limited to CASC. Documentation covers workflows with Blender, Unity, Unreal Engine, and Daz Studio, including FBX and Collada exchange. The Unreal Engine Live Link streams animation in real time, but its plugin must be downloaded and installed separately.
Hardware and sign-in: Minimum requirements include 4 GB of memory, OpenGL 4.1, and a 64-bit multi-core Intel or AMD processor on Windows or Linux; macOS requires an M-series processor. Users must sign in after installation, using Google or a Cascadeur account. These requirements and the account step are worth checking before committing to a workflow.

Pricing

Cascadeur is freemium, with a free plan and a 14-day trial on Pro and Teams.

Free — 0.00 USD per free, free forever: Includes animation and rigging tools, but is limited to non-commercial use and CASC export. It fits learning and personal projects, not work that earns revenue or needs interchange formats.
Indie — 19.00 USD per month, or $8 per month billed annually: Adds FBX and DAE export and priority support. It is for commercial users whose revenue is less than $100k per year. The annual plan also gives access to perpetual license builds. Its revenue ceiling and narrower export list make it less suitable for larger businesses or workflows needing USD or GLTF/GLB.
Pro — 49.00 USD per month, or $33 per month billed annually: Allows commercial use with no limits and adds retargeting, environment interaction, scene linking, and dedicated chat support. The annual plan gives access to perpetual license builds. This is the paid fit for users who need those tools or have outgrown Indie’s revenue limit.
Teams — 49.00 USD per user per month, or $33 per user per month billed annually: Covers 2–6 seats and adds dedicated Discord chat, centralized user management, and role-based permissions. It suits small teams that need shared administration; a solo user should compare Pro instead.

Indie, Pro, and Teams are billed monthly at the stated monthly rates, with lower monthly-equivalent rates on annual billing. Check the applicable commercial terms and export formats before choosing: Free has the strictest limits, while Indie does not include Pro’s expanded commercial terms and tools.

Platforms

Cascadeur supports Windows, macOS, Linux, and iOS. The desktop hardware requirements are specific: Windows and Linux need OpenGL 4.1 and a 64-bit multi-core Intel or AMD processor, while macOS requires an M-series processor.

Who it's for

Cascadeur is a good fit for character animators who want animation, rigging, and physics-based tools in one application, and for artists connecting animation work to supported 3D and game tools. Free is useful for non-commercial learning; Indie suits eligible smaller commercial users; Pro is aimed at unrestricted commercial use and additional scene and retargeting tools; Teams adds administration for groups of 2–6. Look elsewhere if your work depends on motion capture rather than animation creation, or if the free export restriction prevents your projects from moving into another tool.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free includes animation, rigging, physics-based tools, inbetweening, and animation unbaking, so learning the central workflow does not require a subscription.
Pro: Paid exports include five formats, and the documented workflows and Unreal Live Link support production connections to other tools.
Pro: Indie offers FBX and DAE export at $8 per month billed annually, with priority support and perpetual license builds on the yearly plan.
Con: Free is non-commercial and exports only CASC, which rules it out for many production pipelines.
Con: Indie is limited to users below $100k annual revenue and does not list the USD or GLTF/GLB exports available on paid plans more broadly.
Con: Installation requires sign-in, and the desktop minimums include OpenGL 4.1 or an M-series Mac processor.

Alternatives

Choose Blender instead if you want a free, open-source 3D creation suite that downloads without registration and works without an internet connection.

Choose Houdini instead if its freemium model and Windows, macOS, or Linux support better suit your workflow; its Houdini Core workstation perpetual plan is listed at 1995.00 USD per month.

Consider Move AI if you want a freemium tool available across API, mobile, desktop, web, and self-hosted platforms.

Consider Animaze if you want a freemium option available on Android, iOS, Windows, or through an API.

Consider Daz 3D if you want a freemium option with macOS, web, and Windows support.

Consider Rokoko Studio if you want a free motion-processing allowance: its Starter plan includes 30 seconds per month of Vision AI video processing, five Studio imports per month, and one month of cloud storage.

Consider ZBrush if a free iPad plan with 28 brushes fits your needs.

Consider DeepMotion Animate 3D if you want a web or API freemium tool with 25 credits per month and clips up to 20 seconds.

Verdict

Choose Cascadeur if you want to create character animation without motion capture and value animation, rigging, and physics-based tools together, with a free way to learn the workflow. Look elsewhere if you need commercial rights or export beyond CASC without paying, or if your main need is motion capture rather than animation creation.
