Overview

Founded in 1965, Sonoton is based in Munich and brings a large production-music catalogue together with search and license management. Users can search with filters, request curated suggestions from consultants, and manage applications with price estimates and support. That combination is useful when music selection and rights clearance are part of the same job, rather than a straightforward download.

Sonoton says licenses include synchronization and usage rights for the composition and recording from one source. License periods run in perpetuity unless the production changes. The company also says there are no extra fees for layouts, advertising cutdowns, DVD or Blu-ray copies, or language versions. Those terms can simplify reuse, but they do not remove the need to match a license to the intended use. Some commissioned broadcast productions are generally free when the broadcaster has a GEMA contract, with usage notification required; advertising, branded content, and certain secondary uses require licensing.

Key features

Catalogue search and advice

The platform provides access to hundreds of thousands of production tracks and powerful filters. That breadth is a clear advantage for users with specific briefs or varied production needs, though a large catalogue makes curated suggestions valuable. Sonoton offers consultant advice on selection, management, pricing, and licensing by phone, email, and chat.

Trackster matching

Trackster finds similar tracks from an MP3 or WAV upload, or from a YouTube, SoundCloud, or Vimeo URL. It gives users with a reference track a direct way to look for alternatives without relying only on descriptive search.

Licensing workflow

Applications, price estimates, and support sit alongside track search. Online payment is available, and many creations can be licensed for use immediately after payment. Audio productions without voice-over, especially commercial releases, require Sonoton Music approval, so buyers should confirm approval requirements before planning a release around a track.

Sonoton says its music is part of the GEMA World Repertoire, while GEMA administers its own policies. Users should account for that distinction when considering rights and obligations involving GEMA.

Pricing

Pricing is on request, and plan costs vary by use, territory, and billing basis. The low-cost flat-rate options are narrowly framed: Corporate Media at 1.50 USD per year is per track, valid for 365 days, and covers all media and any number of productions for one brand; Advertising at 1.50 USD per year is per track, valid for 365 days, and covers all media and any number of productions for one product. These are inexpensive entry points only if the project fits those terms.

Several one-time options are priced per track and production. AV Productions — Non-fiction — G-S-A costs 100.00 USD per once for non-commercial visual media and streaming. Advertising — Internet/Cinema/Radio — 1 City costs 100.00 USD per once for one city and one usage type. Corporate Media — 1 Medium is 100.00 USD per once, while Corporate Media — All media is 150.00 USD per once; both cover branded content worldwide. Audio — Podcast costs 200.00 USD per once for audio productions worldwide.

Advertising options include TV — 1 City at 200.00 USD per once and All media — 1 City at 300.00 USD per once. Both are per track and production, with a worldwide price list and one-city scope. The 100.00 USD and higher one-time plans exclude 7% VAT where stated. Radio & TV commissioned productions can be free when the commissioned broadcaster has a GEMA contract, but require usage notification. These are use-specific licenses, not a general free tier; the range of terms makes a project-specific quote and license check important.

Who it's for

Sonoton is aimed at business users acting commercially or as self-employed professionals. It is a strong fit for production teams, agencies, and independent professionals that need a deep music catalogue, consultant guidance, and licensing support. It is a weaker fit for casual users or buyers who need a single predictable subscription price. Commercial releases without voice-over also need to account for approval.

Pros and cons

Pros: A catalogue of hundreds of thousands of tracks, powerful filters, and Trackster matching from audio files or supported media URLs give buyers several ways to find music.
Pros: Consultant help and a workflow spanning applications, estimates, support, and online payment can make rights clearance more manageable.
Pros: Synchronization and usage rights for composition and recording can come from one source, with no added fees for listed versioning and cutdown uses.
Cons: Pricing depends on the license and intended use, and custom pricing makes costs less predictable than a flat subscription.
Cons: Low-cost flat-rate plans are limited to one brand or product, while many other licenses are priced per track and production.
Cons: Commercial audio productions without voice-over require approval, which can affect release planning.

Alternatives

For buyers comparing music libraries, stock music libraries offers a broader starting point. Soundstripe is worth considering for its free plan and free trial. RouteNote is a different fit for music distribution, with a free distribution plan and a paid single option. Bensound offers free music with attribution and a paid business plan. Melody Loops offers free tracks for non-commercial use with credit, while commercial and monetized projects need an appropriate license. TuneTank has a free plan capped at three downloads a month and a Pro option at 7.00 USD per month, billed for 12 months. Uppbeat offers three free downloads for individual use on the user’s own channels. Free Music Archive is free for listening, downloading, and streaming, with reuse determined by each work’s license. Free To Use has a free license for non-premium tracks on user-generated social content with attribution, but prohibits commercial use under that license.

Verdict

Choose Sonoton when a commercial production needs a broad production-music catalogue plus guidance and a licensing workflow that can cover both composition and recording. Its range of use-specific terms and consultant support suit buyers willing to match a license to a project. Look elsewhere if predictable subscription pricing, unrestricted self-service, or a simple free commercial-use option is the priority.
