Webdar

What Webdar is
Webdar is a free, open-source backup tool delivered as a small single executable combining a web server with the libdar library. It runs on Linux or as a self-hosted service on the machine holding the data, and you operate it through a browser. Backups can be full, differential, incremental, or decremental. Features include binary deltas, filtering, sliced archives, sparse files, extended attributes, inode types, hard links, and selected-file restoration. Compression options include gzip, bzip2, lzo, xz/lzma, zstd, and lz4. Webdar describes encryption with key derivation and per-slice hashing, with strong ciphering by default. Local storage and FTP or SFTP transfer and restoration are supported. Operations include creation, testing, comparison, listing, isolation, merging, repair, and restoration. Signed source packages and statically linked, distro-independent Linux binaries are available for x86_64 and ARM. The current setup provides an admin user; additional users are planned.
Who it suits
Webdar suits Linux users and self-hosting administrators who need browser-based file backup and restoration. It is also relevant when local, FTP, or SFTP repositories are needed.
What it does well
- Supports four backup types
- Offers multiple compression algorithms
- Includes FTP and SFTP clients
- Provides encrypted backups by default
- Linux binaries support x86_64 and ARM
What to know first
- Mobile backup is not supported
- Only an admin user is currently available
- HTTPS is recommended on untrusted networks
Verdict
Webdar provides a broad libdar-backed backup interface in a compact, self-hosted package. Its main constraints are the Linux-focused availability, absent mobile backup and ransomware protection, and current single-admin user model.
