Vivisect

What Vivisect is
Vivisect is a free, open-source static analysis platform for examining binaries, with the related Vdb tool providing cross-platform debugging. It supports pure Python static and dynamic analysis, including built-in static and symbolic analysis, and offers hybrid analysis. Work can run through an extensible UI, scripts, an API, or headless command-line processing. Bulk analysis can save a workspace as a .viv file, while distributed analysis is available through cobra. Vivisect supports Linux, macOS, Windows, self-hosted use, and architectures including i386, amd64, ARMv7, Thumb16, Thumb, AArch64, MSP430, and H8. Firmware analysis is listed, but a decompiler is not. Python 3.6 and later are supported through pip; the gui extra adds PyQt5 dependencies. Workspaces can be shared between instances or served over a network, and Vdb can attach to processes or launch and attach to them.
Who it suits
Vivisect suits developers, reverse engineers, and analysts who need scriptable binary analysis, debugging, firmware analysis, or headless processing. It is also relevant to users wanting self-hosted or distributed workspace collaboration.
What it does well
- Free Apache-2.0 open-source software
- Static, dynamic, symbolic, and hybrid analysis
- Headless bulk analysis from command line
- Multiple architecture targets listed
- Workspace sharing and distributed analysis
What to know first
- No decompiler listed
- GUI requires the PyQt5 extra
- Current package requires Python 3.6 or newer

Verdict
Vivisect provides broad analysis modes, architecture coverage, scripting, and debugging without a license fee. Users needing a decompiler or an older Python environment should note the listed limitations.
