What PoWA is

PoWA is a free, self-hosted tool for monitoring and tuning PostgreSQL performance. It gathers and aggregates metrics from PostgreSQL instances, then presents them in charts. Local mode monitors one instance; remote mode collects from multiple instances into a repository server and can include read-only standby servers. Adding an instance in remote mode does not require a PostgreSQL restart. The project includes the powa-archivist extension and powa-web interface, with an optional powa-collector daemon for remote use. Supported statistics extensions include pg_stat_statements, pg_qualstats, pg_stat_kcache, pg_wait_sampling, and pg_track_settings. The current version is designed for PostgreSQL 9.4 and newer, and requires pg_stat_statements. HypoPG support allows users to assess hypothetical indexes without creating them. PoWA 5 adds views for replication, background writer, checkpointer, SLRU, WAL, and I/O statistics on PostgreSQL 16 or newer, plus per-database snapshots. Metrics can be selected or disabled, and custom statistics extensions can be added without modifying PoWA. The project warns of performance overhead and disk use. In remote mode, saved server passwords are plain text; the documentation recommends other libpq authentication methods. The interface shows queries only after at least two snapshots, which takes at least 10 minutes at the default frequency.

Who it suits

PoWA suits PostgreSQL administrators who can self-host monitoring and want charts, query profiling, wait and lock analysis, or index assessment. It requires PostgreSQL and pg_stat_statements.

What it does well

  • Monitors one instance or multiple remote instances
  • Can include read-only standby servers
  • Supports hypothetical index analysis with HypoPG
  • Allows custom statistics extensions
  • Free and self-hosted

What to know first

  • Requires PostgreSQL 9.4 or newer and pg_stat_statements
  • Can add performance overhead and disk usage
  • Remote-mode saved passwords are stored in plain text
  • Queries need two snapshots to appear

Limits

The free PoWA plan requires PostgreSQL and pg_stat_statements. The UI shows queries only after they appear in at least two snapshots; at the default frequency, this takes at least 10 minutes.

Getting started

  1. Open the PoWA documentation website.
  2. Install PostgreSQL 9.4 or newer and enable pg_stat_statements.
  3. Choose local mode for one instance or remote mode for multiple instances.
  4. Set up powa-archivist and powa-web; add the optional powa-collector for remote mode.
  5. Select the statistics extensions and metrics to monitor.

Verdict

PoWA provides configurable PostgreSQL monitoring and tuning features, including remote collection and hypothetical index analysis. Account for its resource overhead, the remote-password limitation, and the snapshot delay when planning a deployment.

Questions

How much does PoWA cost?

The listed PoWA plan is free.

Which database does it support?

PoWA supports PostgreSQL and is designed for PostgreSQL 9.4 and newer. pg_stat_statements is mandatory.

Can it monitor multiple PostgreSQL instances?

Yes. Remote mode collects metrics from multiple instances into a repository server, including read-only standby servers.

Can I run PoWA myself?

Yes. Its deployment model is self-hosted, with Linux and web listed as platforms.

What does PoWA 5 add?

It adds views for replication, background writer, checkpointer, SLRU, WAL, and PostgreSQL 16 or newer I/O statistics, plus per-database metric snapshots.

Where can I get support?

The documentation directs users to community IRC and GitHub issue trackers for component-specific support.
