Phone-Free 2FA is a free, open-source browser extension that generates time-based one-time passwords, letting users retrieve login codes from a computer. It creates a new six-digit code every 30 seconds and makes it available to copy from the browser sidebar. It works with services that use standard TOTP authenticator codes, including Microsoft 365, but does not receive push-approval requests. The project lists availability for Chrome, Edge, Firefox and other Chromium browsers. Account details are encrypted and stored locally, and the extension says it sends nothing over the network. Users can export encrypted backups or standard otpauth records to move accounts to another authenticator. The extension can lock when the sidebar closes or after a chosen period of inactivity, and failed unlock attempts lead to longer delays. Touch ID is available on supported Chrome and Edge devices; Firefox users unlock with a master passphrase. There is no central passphrase reset or recovery, so accounts cannot be restored through the extension without a usable backup. It also has no cross-device sync or team administration.

Who it is for

It suits people who need TOTP codes while working at a computer and want to keep their phone elsewhere. It is not suited to teams needing central account administration or users who require push approvals.
