What OpenNMT is

OpenNMT is a free, MIT-licensed open-source ecosystem for neural machine translation and neural sequence learning. It provides OpenNMT-py, based on PyTorch, and OpenNMT-tf, based on TensorFlow. Depending on implementation and version, supported tasks include sequence-to-sequence learning, language modeling, summarization, speech-to-text, and image-to-text. Training features include data augmentation, early stopping, gradient accumulation, mixed precision, multi-GPU and multi-node training, and on-the-fly tokenization. Both implementations list beam search and CTranslate2 compatibility for Transformer inference on CPUs and GPUs. OpenNMT-py also lists ensemble decoding, n-gram blocking, and phrase tables. The ecosystem includes Tokenizer with BPE and SentencePiece support, plus pretrained models for both implementations. OpenNMT-tf documents integrations with TensorFlow 2, Horovod, TensorBoard, TensorFlow Serving, and Python. OpenNMT began in December 2016 with Harvard NLP and SYSTRAN and is maintained by SYSTRAN and Ubiqus. It is available through API, Linux, and self-hosted use. OpenNMT-py is no longer actively supported and points developers to Eole.

Who it suits

OpenNMT suits research and industry users building machine-translation or related sequence-learning systems. It fits teams that can work with open-source implementations, self-hosting, APIs, or Linux environments.

What it does well

  • Free and MIT licensed
  • PyTorch and TensorFlow implementations
  • Supports multiple sequence-learning tasks
  • Includes CPU and GPU inference compatibility
  • Provides training and tokenization tools

What to know first

  • OpenNMT-py is no longer actively supported
  • Supported tasks vary by implementation and version
  • Training guidance recommends an NVIDIA GPU with 8 GB memory

Verdict

OpenNMT offers a broad open-source toolkit for translation and related neural sequence tasks, with training, decoding, tokenization, and serving components. Users choosing OpenNMT-py should note its inactive support status and the pointer to Eole.
