JORAM

What JORAM is
JORAM is an open-source Java implementation of the JMS API and distributed message-oriented middleware. It supports JMS 1.1, JMS 2.0, and Jakarta/JMS 3.0, and is compatible with Java 11 through 21; the project tests it with LTS versions 11, 17, and 21. The broker supports store-and-forward delivery, clustered destinations, and master/slave high availability with replicated data stores. JORAM can operate as a standalone server, be embedded in another product, or connect to a JEE application server through its JCA adapter. It runs as OSGi bundles or a classic Java program, with services such as the command line interface and web console configurable during operation. Administration options include JMX, JMS and REST APIs, XML configuration scripts, and a web console. The project describes authentication, authorization, and encryption support, with TCP and SSL transport options. Documented bridges and extensions cover JMS, AMQP, mail, URL, JMX, and FTP. C and C++ client APIs are available, and other-language clients can connect through Stomp Connect. JORAM is free under LGPL 2.1 or later and distributed through OW2.
Who it suits
JORAM suits developers and operators building Java-based messaging systems who need self-hosted deployment and configurable delivery. It can also serve products or JEE application servers through embedding or its JCA adapter.
What it does well
- Supports JMS 1.1, JMS 2.0, and Jakarta/JMS 3.0.
- Runs standalone, embedded, or through a JCA adapter.
- Provides clustered destinations and replicated-data high availability.
- Administration includes JMX, REST, and a web console.
- Free software under LGPL 2.1 or later.
What to know first
- Since version 5.22.0, Java versions earlier than 11 are unsupported.
- Java compatibility is listed only through version 21.
Limits
JORAM 5.22.0 and later cannot run with Java versions earlier than 11. The software is self-hosted, so deployment and operation remain part of your environment.

Getting started
- Open the JORAM website
- Download source, binary, client, Javadoc, or application-server adapter packages
- Install on Linux or Windows with Java 11 through 21
- Run it as a standalone server, embedded component, or JEE application-server integration
- Configure services through the command line, web console, XML scripts, JMX, REST, or the JMS management API
- Connect clients through JMS, AMQP, STOMP, HTTP/REST, SOAP, C, C++, or Stomp Connect
Verdict
JORAM offers multiple deployment and administration choices alongside clustered messaging and high-availability options. Its Java 11 minimum is a key compatibility constraint for older environments.
