Overview

Facter is a command-line system information tool for administrators and teams collecting machine details across managed environments. It is most useful when those details feed Puppet; as a standalone system checker, its configuration and extension model are less suited to casual users. Its strongest case is flexible fact collection within infrastructure workflows.

Key features

Built-in core facts cover hardware, networking, and operating-system information, with legacy and structured forms; applicability varies by system. Legacy facts stay out of ordinary CLI output unless requested with --show-legacy. Custom facts can be written in Ruby, and multiple resolutions can determine a fact's value. External facts offer a simpler alternative for static values or data returned by an executable script or program. Ruby familiarity is useful for anyone building custom facts.

Facts can use hashes and arrays, while Puppet retains Boolean, numeric, and structured values rather than flattening them into strings. Fact groups can be blocked, and time-to-live caching can reduce repeated collection when gathering facts is slow. These controls are useful for tuning collection, though Facter does not create facter.conf automatically: users must create it or manage it with a module.

Puppet can use Facter's results before requesting a catalog or compiling one with puppet apply; facts are also available in manifests. The CLI's --puppet option loads Puppet-specific facts. PuppetDB's API can support tools for searching and reporting on infrastructure facts. Windows users also get built-in disk and partition facts in Facter 4.21, retrieved through Windows Management Instrumentation.

Pricing

Facter is free. The related Puppet Core Developer plan is 0.00 USD per free for fewer than 25 nodes. Puppet Core Commercial covers 25 or more nodes at custom pricing, while Puppet Enterprise and Puppet Enterprise Advanced also use custom pricing and require contacting sales. The free tier fits smaller environments; organizations beyond its node threshold should compare the commercial options.

Platforms

Facter supports Linux, macOS, Windows, and self-hosted deployments, with a command-line interface. That breadth makes it relevant to mixed operating-system environments, though the workflow remains terminal- and Puppet-oriented.

Who it's for

Choose Facter when administrators need structured machine facts for Puppet catalogs, manifests, or infrastructure reporting, or when built-in collection needs to be extended with custom or external facts. It is a weaker fit for people who want an occasional visual hardware summary without managing configuration or Ruby-based extensions.

Pros and cons

Pros: Built-in, custom, and external facts accommodate varied data sources; structured values retain their types in Puppet; cache and group controls help manage slow collection.
Cons: Configuration requires users to create or manage facter.conf themselves; custom Ruby facts call for Ruby familiarity; legacy facts require an explicit CLI flag.

Alternatives

System Information Software is a broader category directory for comparing tools.

Fastfetch is a free, MIT-licensed command-line option with more than 75 system information modules and support for Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows; choose it when broad platform coverage and a standalone CLI matter more than Puppet integration.

ASTRA32 is a Windows-only freemium option with a free plan for non-commercial use, making it an alternative for Windows users with that use case.

EtreCheckPro offers macOS users a free download with unlimited use, basic reports and diagnostics, and command-line use; its Power User package costs 19.99 USD per once as a single-purchase upgrade. Consider it for Mac-focused diagnostics rather than Puppet fact collection.

hw-probe is a free Linux and self-hosted option from a project that anonymously collects Linux/BSD hardware details and supports collaborative hardware troubleshooting. Choose it when that shared hardware-debugging purpose is central.

HWMonitor has a free Windows x86/x64 plan for monitoring PC hardware sensors, while its PRO Standard plan costs 19.95 USD per once and includes unlimited usage for one year. It suits sensor monitoring rather than Puppet workflows.

AppControl is free to download and use on Windows, with no email or registration required; it is an option for Windows users seeking that kind of lightweight access.

Btrfsmaintenance is a free Linux and self-hosted set of GPL-2.0 scripts for Btrfs filesystem maintenance, so it is relevant when filesystem upkeep—not system fact collection—is the goal.

inxi is a free, GPL 3 or later system information tool focused on GNU/Linux and requiring Perl 5.008 or later; pick it for Linux-focused system summaries outside Puppet.

Verdict

Facter is a strong fit for administrators who need extensible system facts inside Puppet, especially across mixed platforms. Its typed structured data and collection controls are practical advantages; look elsewhere if the goal is a straightforward standalone checker or if managing configuration and Ruby extensions is unwelcome.
