Dory

What Dory is
Dory is a free, GPL-3.0 local development system for Apple Silicon Macs. It combines Docker, Compose, Kubernetes, virtual machines, and agent sandboxes in one setup. Docker 29, Compose v2, BuildKit, and Buildx connect through a standard Docker context. Its local Kubernetes workflow uses k3s and downloads the selected image when a cluster is created. Project-specific agent environments can run in dedicated virtual machines with non-root execution, explicit mounts, and networking disabled by default. A versioned local MCP contract runs over stdio and offers a read-only mode that blocks execution and sandbox changes. Dory requires no account, telemetry, or cloud control plane. The Docker socket is owner-only, and published ports bind to localhost unless widened. Linux support covers ARM64 desktops and headless machines with separate resources and snapshots. Custom ARM64 ISOs are Preview; macOS and Windows guests are on an undated roadmap. Release 0.4.5 for arm64 is listed.
Who it suits
Dory suits Apple Silicon Mac developers who want local containers, Kubernetes, virtual machines, and sandboxed agent environments. ARM64 Linux desktop and headless-machine users are also supported.
What it does well
- Free plan with no account required
- Docker 29, Compose v2, BuildKit, and Buildx
- Local k3s Kubernetes workflow
- Agent VMs use non-root execution
- No telemetry or cloud control plane
What to know first
- macOS and Windows guests have no roadmap date
- Custom ARM64 ISO support is Preview
- Docker data disk defaults to 128 GiB ceiling
Verdict
Dory brings container, Kubernetes, VM, and agent-sandbox workflows into a local system for Apple Silicon Macs. Its privacy defaults, read-only MCP mode, and ARM64 Linux support are clearly defined, while guest-platform support remains limited.
