What AMD SMI is

AMD SMI is a free, open-source user-space library and command-line tool for managing and monitoring AMD hardware on Linux. It provides C++, Python, and Go interfaces, plus the amd-smi CLI. The CLI can report GPU memory and graphics utilization, temperature, ECC errors, power use, fan speed, and partition mode. Supported hardware includes AMD GPUs on Linux bare metal and Linux virtual machine guests, along with AMD EPYC CPUs through esmi_ib_library. AMD SMI is included with most Linux ROCm Core SDK installations or can be installed as the standalone amdrocm-amdsmi package. On select AMD Instinct GPUs, it can configure compute and HBM memory partitions. It also exposes APIs for discovering and querying NICs. GPU access requires the amdgpu-dkms driver; CPU commands need amd_hsmp or hsmp_acpi. Python and CLI use require 64-bit Python 3.6.8 or later.

Who it suits

AMD SMI suits application developers and system users managing AMD hardware, especially in high-performance computing environments. It is intended for Linux systems with supported AMD hardware and drivers.

What it does well

  • Free and open source
  • C++, Python, and Go interfaces
  • CLI reports broad GPU telemetry
  • Supports AMD GPUs and EPYC CPUs
  • NIC discovery and query APIs

What to know first

  • Linux deployment only
  • Requires supported AMD hardware and drivers
  • Partition changes need root or sudo
  • Driver mismatch can hide telemetry
