Facepunch’s guidance points to CPU demand as player counts rise and to memory and disk needs as maps get larger, but it does not prescribe a universal hardware configuration. Facepunch’s server setup guide and its profiler documentation support a measurement-first approach.
Start by identifying what “lag” means
A server that feels slow may be limited by CPU, memory, or storage, but not every player complaint points to server performance. First distinguish server-side slowdown from network or connection problems and from a player’s local rendering issue. Record the symptom and when it occurs before changing settings.
For a useful comparison, note the player count and activity, map size, installed plugins, CPU and memory use, and any server performance indicators available to you. Compare periods with similar activity where possible. There is no source-backed universal benchmark threshold or hardware formula for every Rust server, so measurements from your own deployment matter more than a generic specification.
Match the suspected bottleneck to the server’s workload
When performance worsens as more players join
Facepunch says higher player counts require a faster computer CPU. Check CPU behavior during the actual busy periods and assess the host’s CPU performance and resource allocation before upgrading. This is a directional capacity relationship, not a guaranteed processor recommendation or proof that CPU is the only cause.

When a larger map causes trouble
Facepunch says larger maps require more memory and disk space. Check actual memory pressure and storage capacity against the map and workload in use before buying hardware. A larger map makes those resources worth investigating; it does not by itself establish which one is limiting your server.
Facepunch’s server setup documentation describes these relationships but does not establish a universal amount of RAM, a particular CPU model, or a hosting plan for a given player count or map size.
Use Facepunch’s profiler for a targeted investigation
Facepunch describes profilers as tools for finding memory use and work that slows a server. Its documented setup uses the -enableProfiler startup argument; available commands include profile.perfsnapshot and profile.perfsnapshot_stream. The resulting compressed JSON archives are saved in a profiler folder and can be inspected with a compatible visualization tool such as Perfetto. See the Profiler guide for command details.
Rank #2
- Short capture:
profile.perfsnapshotrecords at most 10 frames. - Longer capture:
profile.perfsnapshot_streamcan collect longer data, but it fills a buffer.
Profiling is diagnostic, not a normal performance baseline: Facepunch warns that recording can significantly degrade server performance. Start a capture intentionally, wait for it to finish and save before taking another snapshot or changing settings, and remove -enableProfiler from startup arguments when the investigation is complete.

Isolate plugin effects
Plugins alter game-server behavior, so they are a reasonable area to investigate if the server uses them. Keep a record of the plugin set and recent changes; where feasible, compare performance with a controlled baseline and equivalent workload. Change one factor at a time and recheck. uMod describes plugins as self-contained code that modifies game-server behavior, but that does not establish that every plugin has a fixed cost or a typical performance penalty. See uMod’s Getting Started documentation.
Verify the effective configuration
There is a conflict in the published setup guidance about which value wins when the same setting appears in startup arguments and a configuration file. Facepunch’s Rust server page says server.cfg takes priority over command-line values. The uMod/Oxide setup guide lists command-line parameters first, then server.cfg, then ServerAuto.cfg. Because those orders differ, do not assume either applies universally to your deployed version. Inspect the effective value on the running server after restart and keep a record of the change. Decide whether hardware or hosting is the next step
Consider an upgrade only after measurements point to a capacity constraint. If memory is demonstrably limiting, check whether compatible RAM can be added; if CPU demand is limiting the intended population, compare host CPU performance and allocated resources. Also check storage, network conditions, compatibility, and headroom for the actual workload.
When comparing hosts, evaluate CPU performance for your expected player load, available memory, storage capacity, network location and connectivity, DDoS protection where relevant, and administrative access. Facepunch discusses capable hosting and DDoS protection for the specific case of a hidden, whitelisted server, not as a controlled ranking of providers. Its hidden-server guidance is not evidence that one provider or operating system is universally faster. The available documentation does not provide controlled contemporary comparisons of processors, operating systems, providers, player counts, map sizes, or plugin combinations.
Quick Recap
Use a repeatable change-and-check loop
- Record the baseline: note the symptom, player activity, map size, plugin set, and available CPU, memory, and performance readings.
- Choose one hypothesis: for example, investigate CPU during busy population periods or memory and disk use with a larger map.
- Make one change: isolate a plugin or configuration adjustment, or test an upgrade if measurements support it. Record what changed.
- Repeat under comparable load: compare the same type of activity and check whether the original symptom and relevant resource readings changed.
- Keep or revert: retain a change only if the comparison supports it; otherwise restore the prior state and investigate a different cause.
