AI can help transcribe a historical cipher, suggest a likely method, and explore possible plaintexts—but a fluent answer is only a hypothesis. A reliable workflow starts with the original artifact, checks the transcription, chooses a solver suited to the cipher, and verifies the proposed key and reading against both the ciphertext and its historical context.
Start with the artifact, not the AI’s answer
Use the best available scan or photograph, and record where the document comes from: its collection or repository, catalogue details, and any known date or provenance. Keep the image as the reference copy. Image enhancement or AI cleanup may make marks easier to inspect, but it can also alter them; never let a processed image replace the original when deciding what a sign says.
Before asking a model to decipher anything, note the document’s visible features: its script, layout, repeated signs, line breaks, symbols that may be punctuation, and any surrounding correspondence or surviving key. These clues can help narrow possibilities, but none by itself proves which cipher or plaintext language was used.
Transcribe the cipher before trying to solve it
Turn the signs into a machine-readable sequence and preserve meaningful layout, such as line breaks or grouping. Use a consistent notation for symbols. If a character is unclear, mark it as uncertain or record more than one possible reading instead of silently choosing one. A single misread sign can change the ciphertext supplied to a solver and lead to a convincing but false result.

AI can assist with character recognition, grouping repeated signs, or proposing alternative readings. Treat these as suggestions to compare with the image. The DECRYPT project describes a workflow in which its TranscriptTool produces a machine-assisted transcription that can be corrected before analysis in CrypTool. That staged process is useful: correct the text against the artifact first, then solve the corrected version.
Build a cipher hypothesis from several clues
Use the artifact and its context to identify plausible cipher families and plaintext languages. Consider the document’s date, location, purpose, script, symbol inventory, repeated patterns, and any related letters, keys, or known plaintext. Historical corpora and expert knowledge can help assess whether a proposed vocabulary or spelling fits the likely period.

AI can help turn these clues into testable hypotheses—for example, by listing likely languages or explaining why a repeated pattern might fit a substitution cipher. Ask it to distinguish evidence from speculation. Do not treat a model’s confident label for a cipher family as confirmation.
Choose a solver that fits the likely cipher
The appropriate method depends on the cipher, the quality and length of the transcription, and what additional evidence is available. A short, noisy text with no known language is a different problem from a clean, long ciphertext with a likely key or a related plaintext.

| Candidate cipher type | What to try | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Monoalphabetic substitution | Inspect repeated-symbol patterns and test language-based substitutions; use a classical-cipher solver to explore candidate mappings. | A 2018 introductory CrypTool 2 paper describes this type as potentially solvable by hand. That is a broad comparison, not a benchmark for every text or tool. |
| Vigenère or another polyalphabetic system | Use a method designed for polyalphabetic ciphers, and test plausible key lengths or other parameters where appropriate. | The same 2018 paper characterizes Vigenère as harder than monoalphabetic substitution; the difficulty of a particular case depends on its text and evidence. |
| Machine cipher | Use methods designed for the specific machine and its settings, alongside any available key, operational records, or known text. | The 2018 paper describes Enigma as nearly impossible to solve by hand alone. This is not a claim that every machine cipher or modern implementation has the same difficulty. |
CrypTool 2 is one documented option: Nils Kopal’s 2018 conference paper describes automated cryptanalysis methods for classical and modern cipher families. Consult the software’s current site and documentation for current builds and instructions; the paper does not establish current version numbers or compare today’s tools.
Use AI for bounded, checkable tasks
A general-purpose AI assistant is most useful when its output can be tested independently. Give it a specific task and the evidence it needs, rather than asking it to “solve this” without constraints.

- Ask for possible readings of a small, unclear section, while retaining the original image and recording alternatives.
- Ask it to identify repeated-symbol patterns in a corrected transcription, then verify those counts yourself or with a separate tool.
- Ask for candidate plaintext languages or period-appropriate vocabulary based on stated provenance, while requiring it to identify which clues support each suggestion.
- Ask it to explain solver output or turn a proposed cipher family into a list of testable next steps.
These are practical uses of AI within a transcription-and-analysis workflow, not a guarantee that a chatbot can accurately perform each task. The DECRYPT and BACK IN TIME project descriptions emphasize staged computational work alongside cryptological, linguistic, and historical judgment. Image-recognition errors can propagate into later analysis, so review model-generated readings against the source.

A plausible sentence is not proof of a decipherment. Verification should test the transformation and the interpretation separately:

- Reproduce the result. Apply the proposed key or machine settings to the recorded ciphertext. Confirm that the transformation yields the claimed plaintext, not merely a similar-looking passage.
- Check the cipher’s behavior. Confirm that repeated symbols and other patterns behave as the proposed cipher requires. Investigate any exceptions rather than overlooking them because the plaintext reads well.
- Check the language and period. Assess spelling, vocabulary, names, dates, and places against the likely language and historical setting. A mechanically valid output can still be misread or historically implausible.
- Seek independent scrutiny. When possible, ask another researcher or test the result with a separate implementation. A second fluent answer from the same model is not independent confirmation.
Keep two conclusions distinct: whether the proposed key or settings mechanically reproduce the plaintext, and whether that plaintext is the correct historical interpretation. The first may be demonstrable even when the second remains uncertain.
Keep an audit trail another person can inspect
Record the scan reference, transcription conventions, uncertain signs and alternatives, candidate cipher family, solver and settings, proposed key or parameters, and why you accepted or rejected each reading. Preserve the ciphertext exactly as analyzed. That record lets another researcher reproduce the result, locate a transcription error, or challenge an interpretation without relying on a chatbot’s explanation.
Where to find historical cipher resources
The DECRYPT project describes DECODE as a database of digitized ciphertext images and keys, with metadata including provenance, location, transcription, possible cryptanalysis, and commentary. Its workflow connects machine-assisted transcription with correction and subsequent cipher analysis. The project website displayed 10,106 records, 6,396 keys, 3,692 ciphers, and 1,124 transcription pages when accessed in 2026; these are changing website counts, not permanent totals. DECRYPT also describes HistCorp as a collection of historical corpora and related resources.
Inria’s BACK IN TIME project describes the role of historians in reliable automation, alongside image processing, cryptology, and linguistics. That multidisciplinary perspective matters because a solver can test a transformation, but historical context helps determine whether the resulting reading makes sense.
A HistoCrypt 2026 proceedings record surfaced a study of GPT’s ability to process and decipher historical cryptographic postcards, often using simple substitution. The available record does not establish a general accuracy rate, so it cannot support a claim that AI reliably solves historical ciphers. Treat claims about model performance as specific to a model, task, and documented evaluation—not as a substitute for checking an individual result.
