If ecommerce emails are landing in spam, first identify which mailbox provider and message type are affected, then inspect a representative message for authentication results. Fix SPF, DKIM, DMARC alignment, DNS, or sending-platform problems before changing marketing copy. Next check consent, list quality, unsubscribe handling, sending volume, and complaint data. These steps address common causes, but no configuration can guarantee inbox placement or a fixed recovery time.
Start by narrowing down the problem
“Email going to spam” can describe two different failures: a message is accepted but sorted into spam, or it is rejected and returned as a bounce. The evidence and fix may differ, so record the exact result rather than treating every delivery problem as a spam-folder issue.
- Which provider? Check whether the issue affects personal Gmail accounts, Yahoo Mail, another provider, or several.
- Which messages? Separate promotional campaigns from order receipts, shipping notices, and password resets. A single campaign or transactional flow may be misconfigured even when other mail works.
- What changed? Note any recent change to your email service provider, DNS, sending domain or IP, visible From address, or sending volume.
Keep a representative affected message and its original headers. If you only have a bounce, preserve the full rejection notice and code. Those details help distinguish authentication or policy failures from filtering based on recipient feedback or sending behavior.
Check SPF, DKIM, and DMARC before rewriting emails
Inspect the original message headers for SPF, DKIM, and DMARC results. Confirm that the email platform you actually use is authorized by your domain’s SPF record and that it signs outgoing messages with DKIM. Then check DMARC alignment: the authenticated SPF or DKIM domain needs to align with the domain recipients see in the From address for direct mail subject to the relevant bulk-sender rules.

When a third-party email provider sends your store’s mail, confirm its current setup instructions and verify that it authenticates your domain with SPF and DKIM. Do not paste generic DNS records over existing ones: SPF records can conflict if a domain has multiple records, and the correct DKIM values depend on the sending platform. Google’s sender guidance explains its requirements and third-party sending checks at Email sender guidelines.
Requirements depend on provider and volume; there is no single authentication rule that applies identically to all ecommerce mail. The following comparison reflects the guidance on the cited Google and Yahoo pages as of October 4, 2026. Check those pages again before making changes, since provider rules can change.
| Area | Google Gmail | Yahoo Mail |
|---|---|---|
| Baseline authentication | All senders to personal Gmail accounts must use SPF or DKIM. | All senders must use SPF or DKIM at minimum. |
| Bulk-sender authentication | More than 5,000 messages per day to Gmail accounts: SPF and DKIM, plus DMARC. Google allows a DMARC policy of p=none; direct mail must align the From domain with SPF or DKIM. |
Bulk senders need SPF and DKIM, a valid DMARC policy of at least p=none, a passing DMARC result, and From-domain alignment with SPF or DKIM. |
| Promotional-mail unsubscribe | Bulk marketing or subscribed messages need one-click unsubscribe and a visible unsubscribe link in the message body. | Bulk marketing messages need a functioning one-click list-unsubscribe method and a visible body link. |
| Complaint signal | Google advises keeping user-reported spam rates below 0.1% and preventing them from reaching 0.3%; use Postmaster Tools for Gmail data. | Bulk senders must keep spam rates below 0.3%; Yahoo’s Complaint Feedback Loop can help track complaints. |
| Other listed checks | Valid forward and reverse DNS, TLS, RFC 5322 formatting, and gradual volume increases. | Valid forward and reverse DNS, and compliance with RFCs 5321 and 5322. |
Google’s additional bulk-sender threshold is more than 5,000 messages per day to Gmail accounts, not a threshold for total store email sent to every provider. Yahoo’s cited page describes bulk-sender requirements without that same numeric threshold. See Yahoo Sender Best Practices for its current guidance.

Verify DNS and message transport
Authentication is not the only technical check. Google lists valid forward and reverse DNS, TLS, and RFC 5322 message formatting among its sender requirements. Yahoo also calls for forward and reverse DNS and compliance with RFCs 5321 and 5322. Ask your sending provider or domain administrator to verify these for the domain or IP that actually sends the mail.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA DNS or TLS issue is not established just because a message landed in spam. Use header results, provider dashboards, and bounce details to identify evidence of a specific failure rather than changing unrelated DNS records.
Make marketing unsubscribe work end to end
One-click unsubscribe requirements apply to eligible marketing or subscribed mail, not automatically to every transactional message. Google and Yahoo distinguish promotional mail from examples such as order confirmations and password resets. Keep transactional messages recognizable as such, and do not turn an operational notice into a disguised promotion.

For eligible marketing mail, RFC 8058 describes the header mechanism: List-Unsubscribe and List-Unsubscribe-Post headers, an HTTPS URI, the value List-Unsubscribe=One-Click, and a valid DKIM signature that covers the relevant headers. A link only in the message body is not the RFC 8058 one-click header mechanism. The specification is documented in RFC 8058.
Google also calls for a clearly visible body unsubscribe link for bulk marketing or subscribed messages. Google says subscription-message opt-outs should be honored within 48 hours; Yahoo says bulk-sender unsubscribe requests must be honored within two days. Test the full path: the link or one-click request should work, the address should be suppressed from future promotional sends, and the preference should not be silently reversed by another campaign list.
Review consent, list quality, and sending patterns
Once technical failures are addressed, check whether recipients expect the messages and whether your sending pattern matches that expectation. Google and Yahoo both emphasize relevant mail to active, engaged audiences. Yahoo summarizes its guidance: “The best way to ensure your messages are delivered is to send timely and relevant email to an active and engaged audience.” See Yahoo Sender Best Practices.

- Send to addresses collected with clear permission and follow applicable local email law.
- Remove invalid or unwanted recipients as appropriate, and honor opt-outs across the systems that feed campaigns.
- Use a cadence customers can reasonably expect from the signup or purchase context; sudden bursts can produce negative feedback.
- After changing a platform, domain, or sending setup, increase volume gradually. Google notes that volume, cadence, and recipient feedback affect how quickly volume should be raised.
- Use consistent, recognizable From identities for different message categories. If you use multiple IPs, Google recommends separating message types by IP.
Do not buy lists or try to evade filtering with deceptive sender names or subject lines. A copy rewrite cannot repair failed authentication or unwanted-recipient complaints.

For mail to Gmail, Google recommends Postmaster Tools. Its sender FAQ advises keeping user-reported spam rates below 0.1% and preventing them from reaching 0.3%. Google says rates are calculated daily; bulk senders above 0.3% are ineligible for mitigation until rates have remained below 0.3% for seven consecutive days. These are Google-specific signals and conditions, not a universal industry threshold.
Yahoo’s bulk-sender spam-rate requirement is below 0.3%. Yahoo’s Complaint Feedback Loop is its separate option for tracking complaint data. Do not treat Yahoo’s feedback loop and Google Postmaster Tools as interchangeable; each covers its provider’s signals. Google’s details are in the Email sender guidelines FAQ, while Yahoo describes its feedback approach in its Sender Hub FAQs.

Reassess from evidence, not guesswork
After correcting a specific problem, check subsequent message headers, provider dashboards, bounce or rejection codes, and complaint trends. If only one flow remains affected, compare its sender domain, authentication, audience, and sending platform with a flow that is delivering normally.
The cited provider guidance does not give a universal inbox-recovery timeline. Changing a subject line, adding a physical address or product, warming an IP on an arbitrary schedule, or switching email providers does not by itself establish that delivery will recover. Make changes that address an observed failure, then judge the result with the provider-specific evidence.
