Replace a fantasy starter as soon as the player is officially ruled inactive: an inactive player will not play and cannot score. If the player is still a game-time decision, weigh the chance and value of his role against the risk of waiting until every eligible replacement has locked. Your platform’s lineup deadline and league settings determine how long you can wait.
What to do when the player is ruled inactive
Once the team lists a player as inactive, take him out of your lineup and insert an eligible player who has not yet locked. NFL Fantasy Support says teams designate inactives about 90 minutes before scheduled kickoff. Treat that as a useful time to check, not a guarantee that every late update will arrive on schedule.
For NFL players, check the team’s official inactive announcement near kickoff. NFL Fantasy Support explains its inactive timing and the platform’s Auto-Swap Inactives feature. Confirm your own service’s lineup deadline as well: NFL.com’s beginner’s guide to Fantasy Football advises making changes before the relevant game starts, while league and platform rules can differ.
What to do while the player is still a game-time decision
“Questionable” or “game-time decision” means the outcome is not yet confirmed; it is not the same as inactive. Practice participation and a final game-status decision are separate signals. The NFL’s injury-report policy distinguishes practice participation from game status and provides for prompt reporting of relevant events after a Friday update and before the inactive-player submission meeting. Look for late, credible status news rather than treating a practice designation as the final word.

If your replacement will remain unlocked, waiting for reliable news can preserve the option to start the original player if active. If waiting could leave you with no legal replacement, decide whether that risk is worth taking. A sensible fallback is an eligible player with an earlier kickoff, chosen before that player locks.
Compare the starter and replacement before choosing
If both players are eligible and the starter’s availability remains uncertain, make the decision using your league’s actual scoring and roster rules. There is no universal start/sit formula that determines the right choice without player-specific context.

- Availability: Is there a confirmed inactive designation, or only an unresolved status?
- Expected workload: If the starter plays, how much work is he expected to receive?
- Replacement role: Is the backup likely to have a meaningful role, or is his playing time uncertain too?
- Scoring and eligibility: Does the backup fit the open roster spot, and how does your scoring format value each player’s likely contributions?
- Matchup and kickoff: Consider the matchup, and verify that the replacement’s game has not started or locked under your league’s rules.
Check your lineup deadline and auto-swap settings
Lineup-change deadlines are platform- and league-dependent. NFL Fantasy’s Official Rules 2024 ties status changes to the player’s scheduled start; check the current rules for your service and league before relying on a particular cutoff.
NFL Fantasy offers an optional Auto-Swap Inactives setting. Its support page says the feature swaps out a starter projected to score zero and starts the highest-ranked player on the manager’s configured backup list. It applies to NFL Fantasy; do not assume another platform behaves the same way. Check that the option is enabled, review the backup order, and verify how your league handles eligibility and locked players.
