Under the Reserve Bank of India’s enhanced UPI Lite limits, a payment can be up to ₹1,000 and the Lite balance can hold up to ₹5,000. NPCI says regular UPI transactions are generally available up to ₹1 lakh per transaction, with higher limits for some categories. Your bank and app may impose lower limits or may not support every feature.
UPI Lite and regular UPI at a glance
| Decision point | UPI Lite | Regular UPI |
|---|---|---|
| Where the money comes from | A balance you load from a linked bank account before paying. | A payment initiated against your linked bank account. |
| Per-payment limit | Up to ₹1,000 under the RBI’s enhanced framework. | NPCI lists up to ₹1 lakh for normal UPI; limits vary for certain categories and implementations. |
| Balance held for payments | Up to ₹5,000 in the Lite balance. | No separate prefunded Lite balance; the payment uses the linked account. |
| Authentication | Qualifying offline payments may be offered without mandatory additional factor authentication under the RBI framework. | A UPI PIN authorizes bank transactions, according to NPCI. |
| Best suited to | Small, routine purchases when Lite is available and funded. | Larger payments, transfers and payments above the Lite payment ceiling. |
These are product ceilings, not a guarantee that every bank, app, merchant or transaction category will allow the maximum. NPCI notes that service availability depends on the payment service provider (PSP) and issuing bank.
How UPI Lite works
UPI Lite is a prefunded balance inside a supported UPI app, rather than a separate bank account. You enable it and allocate money from a linked bank account. NPCI’s launch description says the bank maintains the funds in a designated arrangement while the balance is represented on the device.
That advance loading is what makes Lite convenient for repeated low-value payments: you spend from the balance rather than initiating each payment directly against the bank account. You need to keep enough money in Lite, and replenishing the balance requires an online step.

Does UPI Lite work without internet?
Only in a bounded sense. The RBI defines an offline payment as “a transaction which does not require internet or telecom connectivity to take effect.” Its framework concerns proximity, face-to-face transactions. NPCI’s original Lite flow describes an offline debit, but online balance replenishment and online processing of credits, including refunds.
So “offline” does not mean every part of using Lite works without connectivity. You cannot assume you can load funds, receive a refund, or complete every merchant’s payment flow offline. Availability also depends on the app and the particular payment setup.

When should you use each?
Use UPI Lite for small, frequent purchases
- The payment is within the applicable Lite limit.
- Your UPI app supports Lite and your balance is sufficient.
- You want to pay from a small prefunded balance rather than manage each small purchase as a direct bank-account transaction.
Use regular UPI for larger payments and transfers
- The amount is above the Lite per-payment ceiling.
- You want the payment to draw on your linked bank account without first loading a separate Lite balance.
- You need a transaction type or category not supported by Lite.
For normal UPI, NPCI’s stated ceiling is not a promise that every user can send that amount: applicable category rules and bank or app limits still matter. Check the limits and enabled services in your own UPI app or with your bank.
UPI Lite Tap & Pay is optional
Tap & Pay is a narrower NFC-based way to use UPI Lite, not a requirement for ordinary Lite payments or regular UPI. NPCI says the feature requires an NFC-capable phone or device. Its Tap & Pay overview describes the Lite route for amounts up to ₹500 in that journey, with UPI PIN authorization for larger amounts. App support can change, so check current availability in your UPI app.

Authentication and safe use
Reduced authentication friction for qualifying offline payments does not mean that every Lite payment skips authentication or that Lite removes fraud risk. NPCI describes the UPI PIN as a 4–6 digit code used to authorize bank transactions. Protect it, verify the payee and amount before paying, and check the transaction status in your app if a payment is unclear.

Some official materials still show earlier limits. NPCI’s March 2022 launch circular set a ₹200 payment limit and ₹2,000 wallet limit; an older NPCI product booklet also lists those caps and a ₹4,000 cumulative daily spend figure. Those are historical figures, not the later enhanced RBI ceilings.

A June 2024 RBI publication described a then-current ₹2,000 wallet and ₹500 payment limit and discussed proposed auto-replenishment under the e-mandate framework. That dated snapshot and proposal should not be confused with the later enhanced limits or treated as the final instruction on auto-replenishment. When checking a limit, distinguish the publication date and whether it describes an operative rule or a proposal.
