Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor basic electronics repair, start with a digital multimeter, device-matched precision screwdrivers, ESD-safe plastic opening tools, tweezers, good lighting and a way to organize small parts. Add a soldering iron, stand, solder, flux and desoldering wick only if the repair involves soldered connections. The right kit depends on the device and the work—not on a universal checklist.
Start with diagnosis and safe access
Most beginner repairs begin by checking a symptom and opening a device without damaging its case, fasteners or internal parts. These tools cover that first stage.
Digital multimeter
A multimeter can help check continuity, voltage and resistance when troubleshooting. iFixit’s introductory multimeter guide explains these basic measurements. Choose a meter with functions suited to the checks you plan to make, appropriate input ratings, usable leads and clear safety instructions; no particular model or specification is established as essential for every repair.
Precision screwdrivers
Use bits that match the device’s fasteners. An ill-fitting bit can slip or damage a screw, so check the device-specific repair instructions before opening it rather than assuming one driver set covers every device.

Plastic opening picks or spudgers
Plastic tools can help separate a case or manipulate delicate parts. Prefer tools identified as ESD-safe when working around sensitive electronics. iFixit’s tool guidance warns that metal spudgers are not ESD-safe and may cause harm or damage if misused. Choose the tool’s material and edge thickness for the device and access point.
Tweezers, lighting and parts organization
Fine tweezers help handle small parts; good lighting makes inspection easier, and a parts tray or another simple organizer helps keep screws together. These are useful supporting items, not evidence-backed requirements with a single necessary specification.

Add soldering tools only for soldered repairs
Opening and diagnosing a device do not automatically require soldering equipment. If the planned repair involves joining or reworking soldered connections, a basic setup includes an iron, a stable stand and solder. Flux can support the work, while desoldering wick (also called braid) helps remove solder. iFixit’s beginner soldering guide and soldering overview describe basic equipment and practices. Match materials and technique to the repair, and follow each product’s instructions.
For an iron, consider temperature control, compatible tips, a stable stand and suitability for the particular work. One iFixit guide gives 25–50 W as a general range for basic soldering, not a universal requirement; the correct fit depends on the task and equipment.

Choose a kit or assemble tools individually
A set can provide a convenient starting point, while buying items individually lets you match tools to a specific device and repair. Compare the contents against the work you intend to do:

Work safely and know when the repair is beyond a starter kit
Disconnect a device from power before opening or testing it, consult its manufacturer’s instructions and follow device-specific repair guidance. Batteries, power supplies and mains-connected equipment can carry hazards that a basic tool list does not address. Do not use beginner repairs as a reason to probe live mains circuits or open high-voltage equipment, and use appropriate ESD precautions for the device and components.
Soldering adds burn, fire and fume hazards. iFixit’s beginner guide notes that irons can exceed 400 °C (800 °F). Keep a hot iron in its stand and never leave it unattended; use eye protection and ventilation or fume extraction, keep the work area clear, follow the iron manufacturer’s directions, and wash your hands after soldering, particularly if leaded solder may be involved. These are soldering precautions, not a complete electrical safety procedure.
