If you want a terminal workflow, OpenSSH is a practical starting point—Microsoft documents how to install and use it on Windows. For a free Windows-oriented SSH and Telnet application, consider PuTTY. If you want one vendor’s client across desktop and mobile, Termius lists Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. Android users looking for a dedicated app can also investigate ConnectBot, but verify its current availability and maintenance before choosing it.
How to choose an SSH client
Start with the devices you actually use and how you prefer to connect. A terminal client suits people comfortable entering commands; a graphical client can make saved sessions easier to manage; a cross-platform manager may be more convenient if you want the same product on desktop and mobile.
- Platform coverage: Confirm that the client supports every operating system you need. A mobile app does not imply a desktop version.
- Connection workflow: Decide whether you want a command line, a graphical interface, or both.
- Host and key management: Check how the client saves hosts and handles SSH keys. If you need shared or synchronized settings, verify how synchronization works and whether it requires an account or paid plan.
- Related tools: Check for SFTP or SCP file transfer and port forwarding if your work depends on them; these features are not universal.
- Security and service requirements: Review the client’s key types, any security-key compatibility, and whether your data is stored locally or through a cloud service.
- Cost and limits: Confirm current pricing and which features are included in the plan you intend to use.
SSH client options by workflow
| Option | Platforms or fit | What is established | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenSSH | Command-line workflow; Windows setup is documented by Microsoft | Microsoft provides an official installation and first-use guide for OpenSSH on Windows: Microsoft Learn: OpenSSH installation and first use. | Use the documentation for the operating system and version you run; this guide establishes the Windows route. |
| PuTTY | Windows-oriented graphical SSH and Telnet client | PuTTY’s official site describes it as a free SSH and Telnet client: PuTTY. | Check the official site for the build and platform support relevant to your device; do not assume a particular feature or platform version without confirmation. |
| Termius | One vendor across desktop and mobile | Its feature page lists Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, as well as host management, SFTP, port forwarding, SSH key management, FIDO2 security keys, and encrypted vaults: Termius features. | Termius describes its own product. Confirm which features are available on your platform and plan, along with current pricing and account or synchronization requirements. |
| ConnectBot | Dedicated Android SSH option | A secondary overview describes ConnectBot as an open-source Android SSH client: SSH client comparison. | Check an official project or app-store source for current availability and maintenance. The cited overview does not establish desktop support or synchronized hosts. |
| SkerrySSH | Project-listed cross-platform option to investigate | The project page lists Linux, Windows, macOS, and Android: SkerrySSH. | Before relying on it, check the project’s current releases, download source, signing, and feature documentation. The project-maintained comparison is not independent verification of competitor claims. |
When OpenSSH is the right starting point
Choose OpenSSH if you already work in a terminal or want to use the Windows option documented by Microsoft. The official guide covers installation and first use on Windows; consult platform-specific documentation for macOS or Linux rather than assuming the Windows instructions apply there. OpenSSH avoids choosing a separate graphical host manager, but it may be less convenient if you prefer to organize connections visually.
When a graphical client makes more sense
Choose PuTTY for a straightforward Windows-oriented option
PuTTY is a candidate if you want a free graphical SSH and Telnet client on Windows. Its official page supports those basic product descriptions, but does not establish every advanced feature or compatibility detail a particular setup might require. Check its official site before downloading.

Choose Termius if you need desktop and mobile coverage
Termius is the clearest listed candidate when your device mix spans desktop and mobile: its vendor feature page names Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. The same page lists host management, SFTP, port forwarding, key management, FIDO2 security keys, and encrypted vaults. Treat these as vendor-stated capabilities, and confirm availability for your platform and plan before depending on a specific feature.
Termius also makes security claims about end-to-end encryption for infrastructure data and local storage for direct server connections. Those are vendor claims, not an independent security audit. If data handling is important to your choice, read the vendor’s current documentation and decide whether its account or cloud model fits your needs.

Android: treat mobile support as its own requirement
For Android, ConnectBot is one option to investigate as a dedicated SSH client. The available overview does not establish its current maintenance or app availability, so check an official project or app-store listing before installing. Do not assume an Android-focused app has a desktop counterpart or can synchronize hosts across devices.
If you need the same client on Android and a computer, Termius explicitly lists Android alongside Windows, macOS, and Linux. Verify plan limits and synchronization requirements directly with the vendor before relying on shared host settings.

Security keys, file transfer, and tunneling
Feature names alone do not guarantee that a particular connection will work. For FIDO2 security-key authentication, check the exact SSH key type supported by the client, your server configuration, and the key model. Termius lists FIDO2 security-key support, but that does not establish compatibility for every key, server, or client configuration.
Likewise, verify SFTP or SCP support if you need file transfers and port forwarding if you rely on tunnels. Termius lists SFTP and port forwarding on its feature page; confirm that each is available in the version and plan you will use. The options above should not be treated as interchangeable on these capabilities without checking their current product documentation.
