USB Linux API: Calling ioctl Requests from a User-Space App

A practical guide to Linux usbfs: discover a peripheral, claim its interface, issue structured control or bulk ioctls, and handle hot-unplug safely.

On Linux, a userspace program can communicate with many USB peripherals through usbfs without writing a kernel driver: discover the device under /dev/bus/usb/BBB/DDD, inspect its descriptors, claim the needed interface, then issue the ioctl that matches the endpoint and transfer type. Use USBDEVFS_CONTROL for control transfers and USBDEVFS_BULK for synchronous bulk data; these calls take defined structures, not an arbitrary byte buffer. Device addresses can change after re-enumeration, so find and validate the device at runtime.

How Linux exposes USB devices to userspace

The Linux USB host API exposes device nodes through usbfs, typically at /dev/bus/usb/BBB/DDD, where the bus and device numbers identify the current enumeration. They are not permanent identifiers: reconnecting or re-enumerating a peripheral can change them, and a number may later be reused. Discover the device again after reconnecting instead of persisting the path as its identity. See the Linux 6.17 USB host-side API documentation.

USB communication is organized around configurations, interfaces and endpoints. As the kernel documentation puts it, “USB device drivers actually bind to interfaces, not devices.” A device-specific protocol may therefore require claiming a particular interface and following the device or USB class specification to determine which requests and endpoint addresses are meaningful.

Linux supports control, bulk, interrupt and isochronous transfers. Choose the transfer type the device exposes and its protocol requires; an ioctl cannot turn one endpoint type into another. For a C or C++ program, the kernel documentation also points to libusb as a userspace library option that wraps USB access.

Choose the ioctl for the operation

Need Interface Use it for
Control request USBDEVFS_CONTROL USB setup fields and an optional data buffer for device, class or vendor requests.
Synchronous bulk transfer USBDEVFS_BULK Reading from or writing to a bulk endpoint selected from the device descriptors.
Concurrent/asynchronous transfers USBDEVFS_SUBMITURB and corresponding reap or discard operations Submitting work for later completion handling, with more lifecycle management than a synchronous call.
Interface ownership USBDEVFS_CLAIMINTERFACE and USBDEVFS_RELEASEINTERFACE Claiming and releasing the interface used for transfers.
Clear a halted bulk or interrupt endpoint USBDEVFS_CLEAR_HALT Clearing an endpoint halt as documented by the kernel; do not substitute a raw control request.

For straightforward request/response work, synchronous control or bulk ioctls are usually easier to manage. Asynchronous URBs make sense when concurrent or sustained requests matter enough to justify tracking submission, completion and cancellation. Host controllers can report failures differently, so handle error returns rather than relying on one machine’s behavior.

Prepare the device and interface

  1. Discover and validate. Enumerate connected USB devices, identify the intended device using its descriptors and other suitable identity information, and verify that its configuration, interface, endpoints and transfer types match what the application expects. Do not use a remembered BBB/DDD path as a stable identity.
  2. Open the current node. Open the selected usbfs node with access appropriate for the intended operation. The kernel reference says default usbfs nodes are writable only by root. A production application should use the host’s deliberate, narrowly scoped device permissions rather than treating root execution or a broad world-writable rule as the routine fix.
  3. Claim the interface if needed. Use USBDEVFS_CLAIMINTERFACE for the interface you intend to use, and release it with USBDEVFS_RELEASEINTERFACE when finished. A claim can conflict with a kernel driver already bound to that interface; do not detach or otherwise manipulate a driver casually. Closing the file descriptor also releases claims.
  4. Read the protocol details. Determine the endpoint address, direction and transfer type from descriptors. Descriptor information identifies the USB layout; it does not by itself explain every device-specific request or data format.

Build and issue a synchronous control request

USBDEVFS_CONTROL expects a control-transfer structure. Populate its request type, request, value, index, length, timeout and data pointer according to the USB request and the peripheral’s protocol. The direction is encoded in the request type; the buffer and length must agree with whether the request has a data stage.

Pass a pointer to that structure as the ioctl argument. Check the return value and, when the operation includes data, use the documented return/length behavior to determine what was transferred. Do not treat the ioctl argument as a generic buffer containing only payload bytes. Transfer limits can depend on the kernel and host controller, so do not assume an arbitrary length will be accepted everywhere.

Read or write a bulk endpoint

USBDEVFS_BULK also takes a defined structure: provide the endpoint address, buffer pointer, requested length and timeout. Use the endpoint address and direction from the descriptors; device-to-host direction is represented in the endpoint address as documented for the API. Supply a writable buffer for reads and valid data for writes.

Check both whether the ioctl succeeded and how many bytes were actually transferred. A successful call need not mean the requested length was filled. The USB device protocol determines how to interpret partial data, framing and follow-up requests.

Handle errors, stalls and disconnects

  • Permission failure: check the device-node access policy for the account running the application. Avoid resolving routine access problems by running the whole application as root.
  • Timeout or other transfer error: treat the return as an operation failure, consult the device protocol, and avoid assuming every host controller reports the same underlying condition in the same way.
  • Endpoint stall: for a halted bulk or interrupt endpoint, the kernel documents USBDEVFS_CLEAR_HALT. Its reference cautions against substituting a raw control request for this operation.
  • Disconnect (ENODEV): stop issuing ioctls on that descriptor and close it. After the device is connected again, rediscover it, validate it and open its current node.

The kernel documentation warns about synchronization concerns with USBDEVFS_RESETEP and USBDEVFS_RESET in the described circumstances. Do not use reset as a generic recovery shortcut; choose a recovery action appropriate to the operation and device.

When to use libusb instead of raw ioctls

Raw usbfs ioctls expose Linux’s interface directly and can be useful when an application needs those specific kernel operations. A library such as libusb provides a higher-level userspace API for common device discovery, interface and transfer work. The choice depends on the device protocol, whether synchronous simplicity or asynchronous concurrency is needed, and how the application will manage permissions and hot-unplug. These are host-side APIs for programs controlling peripherals; USB gadget programming is a different case in which Linux runs on the peripheral side.
