HTTP vs. HTTPS: What the Difference Means for Browsing Safety

HTTPS protects the connection between your browser and a website, but it cannot prove the site itself is trustworthy. Learn how to check the domain and respond to security warnings.

HTTPS is safer than HTTP for browsing because it encrypts the connection, helps detect tampering, and authenticates the server for the requested domain. But HTTPS does not prove a website is honest or its content safe: a phishing site can use HTTPS too. Check the full domain before sharing sensitive information.

HTTP vs. HTTPS at a glance

What it means HTTP HTTPS
Connection Web traffic is sent without TLS protection in ordinary browser use. MDN HTTP is carried over a TLS-secured connection. MDN
Privacy and tampering People able to observe traffic on the network may read or modify it. CISA TLS encrypts traffic in transit and helps detect changes to it. MDN
Server identity No TLS certificate-based authentication of the requested domain. A TLS certificate helps the browser authenticate the server for the requested domain. MDN
Whether the site is trustworthy The scheme does not establish whether the site owner is honest. HTTPS also does not establish honesty; fraudulent sites can use HTTPS. FTC

In short, HTTPS protects the connection between your browser and a server. It does not certify the business, people, downloads, or claims on the site.

What HTTPS protects

HTTP is the protocol browsers use to request and receive web resources. HTTPS is that HTTP exchange carried over Transport Layer Security (TLS). MDN describes TLS as providing three protections: encryption, integrity, and authentication.

  • Encryption: Helps prevent others on the route between you and the server from reading the data you send and receive.
  • Integrity: Helps prevent an intermediary from secretly changing traffic without detection.
  • Authentication: The certificate helps the browser check that it is connecting to a server for the domain you requested.

Plain HTTP does not provide those TLS protections. On an untrusted network, an observer may be able to see unprotected exchanges or interfere with them. HTTPS is therefore especially important when you enter passwords, payment details, or personal information.

  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Does the padlock mean a website is trustworthy?

No. The browser’s secure-connection indicator means the connection is protected; it is not an endorsement of the site or its operator. A scammer can set up a deceptive site that uses HTTPS. The FTC likewise cautions that encryption does not by itself make a website safe to trust. FTC guidance on public Wi-Fi

Before entering sensitive information, inspect the entire domain, not just the “https://” prefix or padlock. If a message unexpectedly links to a retailer, bank, or service, use a known address or a trusted route to reach it instead. A lookalike domain can still have a valid encrypted connection.

Is HTTPS safe on public Wi-Fi?

HTTPS is a major protection on public Wi-Fi because it encrypts the connection to the site. The FTC says public Wi-Fi use is usually safe given how widespread encryption is, but that does not make every hotspot or website trustworthy. Keep checking the domain and be cautious with unexpected links. FTC

Why an HTTPS page can still show security warnings

An HTTPS page may request some resources over unencrypted HTTP. This is called mixed content. For example, a page loaded securely might include a script or image fetched over HTTP. The insecure resource can weaken the page’s protection; browsers block many active insecure resources and may warn about other insecure content. MDN’s mixed-content guide

What an HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect does—and does not do

Some sites first receive a request over HTTP and then redirect the browser to HTTPS. That redirect moves you to the encrypted connection, but the initial request is not protected by TLS. An attacker able to interfere with that first exchange may be able to prevent or alter the upgrade.

HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) helps on later visits. A site sends an HSTS policy over HTTPS, and the browser then uses HTTPS for future requests to that host while the policy remains active. For an HSTS-protected host, the browser also does not offer a click-through to bypass a certificate error. HSTS does not automatically eliminate the first-visit gap unless the domain is already covered by a browser preload mechanism. MDN on HSTS

What to do when you browse

  • Prefer HTTPS before entering passwords, payment details, or personal information; do not submit sensitive information on a site that remains on HTTP.
  • Check the whole domain, especially when following a link from an unsolicited email, text, or social post.
  • If your browser reports a certificate or secure-connection error, do not bypass it to continue. The warning can indicate that the connection cannot be authenticated securely.
  • On public Wi-Fi, use HTTPS sites and apply the same checks to the hotspot, domain, and links that you would elsewhere.
