To restore Firefox’s default theme, disable the active optional theme in Extensions and themes > Themes. Firefox switches to its built-in System theme. If you also changed toolbar buttons or layout, use More Tools > Customize toolbar > Restore Defaults instead—but that resets more than the theme.
Reset only the Firefox theme
- Click the Firefox menu button.
- Select Extensions and themes, then open Themes.
- Find the enabled optional or added theme and click Disable.
Firefox activates the built-in System theme. Firefox also includes built-in System, Light, Dark, and Alpenglow themes; these cannot be removed, but you can switch between them. Added themes can be disabled or removed in the Themes manager. Mozilla’s theme instructions explain the available controls.

Reset the toolbar and layout as well
If the buttons or toolbar arrangement are also different, the broader reset restores the default toolbar and theme. These steps apply to Firefox desktop on Windows, macOS, and Linux:
- Click the menu button.
- Select More Tools, then Customize toolbar.
- Click Restore Defaults.
This also changes vertical tabs back to horizontal tabs if vertical tabs are enabled. Use this reset only if you want those layout changes undone too. Mozilla provides separate customization guidance for mobile Firefox. See Mozilla’s desktop toolbar instructions.

Choose the right fix for the problem
| Option | What it changes | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Disable an added theme | Switches the appearance to Firefox’s System theme. | The theme changed, but the toolbar layout is otherwise fine. |
| Restore Defaults | Restores default toolbar buttons and toolbars, resets the theme, and reverts vertical tabs to horizontal tabs if enabled. | You want to undo toolbar or layout customization too. |
| Troubleshoot Mode | Temporarily uses the default theme and disables extensions, among other changes. | You want to test whether a theme, extension, or hardware acceleration is behind an appearance problem. |
| Refresh Firefox | Resets preferences and removes themes and extensions while preserving personal information Mozilla lists. | The narrower steps have not resolved a persistent problem and you accept a broader reset. |
Use Troubleshoot Mode to diagnose a stubborn change
Troubleshoot Mode is a temporary diagnostic state, not a permanent customization reset. If the appearance problem disappears there, a theme, extension, or hardware acceleration is a likely cause. Restart Firefox normally to return to the prior state, then disable or remove the suspected added theme or extension through Extensions and themes. Mozilla’s Troubleshoot Mode guide describes how to use it.
Use Refresh Firefox only as a broader reset
Refresh Firefox resets preferences and removes themes and extensions, so it is much broader than turning off one theme or restoring the toolbar. Mozilla says Refresh Firefox preserves bookmarks, browsing history, open tabs and windows, passwords, cookies, and web form autofill information. Review what Refresh Firefox changes and keeps before proceeding.
