A knowledge layer helps a SQL agent find the right database objects and understand what they mean before it writes a query. It can index tables, columns, comments, relationships, business terms, and reviewed query definitions, giving the agent more useful context than raw table names alone. It improves grounding, but it does not guarantee correct SQL or enforce database permissions; validation and access controls still belong in the execution path.
Why a SQL agent needs a knowledge layer
A user asks, “Which customers spent the most last quarter?” The database may contain several customer-related tables, multiple date fields, and more than one plausible definition of “spent.” A language model given only the question—or a list of table names—has to guess which objects and definitions apply.
A knowledge layer makes relevant schema and business context searchable. Instead of sending the agent every database detail, the system can retrieve likely tables, columns, definitions, comments, and relationships for the request. EnterpriseDB’s [semantic knowledge base documentation](https://www.enterprisedb.com/docs/ai/semantic_knowledge_base/v7/) describes indexing table and view definitions, column details, and comments; its [text-to-SQL documentation](https://www.enterprisedb.com/docs/ai/text_to_sql/v7/) shows how schema search and reusable query knowledge can support an agent.
What the knowledge layer can contain
Schema and structural metadata
The foundation is the database’s shape: table and view names, columns, types, defaults, nullability, and definitions. This helps the agent distinguish, for example, a transaction date from an account-creation date or a customer identifier from a similar-looking field.

Business meaning and relationships
Comments, aliases, metric descriptions, and business-term definitions connect everyday language to database objects. Relationship information, such as foreign keys and curated joins, helps the agent determine how relevant tables connect rather than merely identifying them.
These details matter when names are ambiguous. A comment can explain what a field represents; a reviewed definition can clarify what a company means by “revenue” or “active customer.” If those definitions are missing or stale, retrieval may surface the wrong objects or leave the agent to infer a metric’s meaning.

Reviewed query definitions
For recurring questions, a team can store a reviewed, parameterized SQL query and map familiar phrasing to it. EnterpriseDB calls these semantic aliases and describes them as a governed, deterministic route for repeated questions. This can avoid generating new SQL each time for a known request, while still allowing open-ended questions to use generated SQL.
Data content, when needed
Schema search and content retrieval do different jobs. A schema knowledge base helps locate the tables and columns to query; a separate retrieval system may find relevant rows, documents, or other content. Some applications need both. AWS describes an ontology-based virtual knowledge graph that can combine structured and unstructured knowledge in its [Knowledge Layer guidance](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/prescriptive-guidance/latest/strategy-knowledge-graphs/knowledge-layer.html), while Microsoft’s [RAG overview for SQL Server and Azure SQL](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/sql-server/ai/intelligent-applications) describes external material as supporting context.

How a SQL agent uses it
- Interpret the request. The system identifies whether the question calls for a database lookup, a calculation, document retrieval, or a combination. Oracle’s reference design uses a router to select a processing path.
- Find relevant context. The agent searches for likely tables, columns, definitions, comments, relationships, and any matching reviewed query. Oracle describes semantic search and reranking to narrow candidate tables; EnterpriseDB describes ranked schema search and narrower lookups.
- Generate or select SQL. For a new question, the agent can generate SQL using the retrieved context. For a known recurring question, it may select a reviewed parameterized query instead. AWS also documents generating SQL from natural-language requests for structured data.
- Validate and execute. The query should pass through controls before it runs. Oracle’s example design includes syntax validation before execution; other documented approaches use read-only queries, least-privilege roles, or configured tools and constraints.
- Explain the result. The agent can interpret returned rows in terms of the user’s question. Its explanation should remain tied to those results and make ambiguity or missing data clear when the query cannot settle the question.
What grounding improves—and what it cannot guarantee
Retrieving actual definitions and comments gives SQL generation a better basis for choosing columns, joins, and business meanings than relying on names alone. Oracle’s reference architecture narrows the schema supplied for a request, and EnterpriseDB describes grounding questions in indexed schema.
That is an improvement in context, not proof that a query is correct. AWS cautions: “The accuracy of a generated SQL query can vary depending on context, table schemas, and the intent of a user query. Evaluate the generated queries to ensure that they suit your use case before using them in your workload.” See its [structured-data query-generation documentation](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/bedrock/latest/userguide/knowledge-base-generate-query.html).

A knowledge layer also cannot decide an undocumented business rule reliably. If “last quarter” depends on a fiscal calendar, or “spent” means net rather than gross spend, those definitions need to be available and current. High-impact definitions should have an owner and a review process.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Knowledge discovery is not database permission enforcement
The layer helps an agent discover context; it does not, by itself, grant or restrict access to database rows or operations. Permission boundaries must be enforced where queries execute.

- EnterpriseDB describes semantic search tools as read-only and semantic aliases as single read-only
SELECTstatements; aliases can use a least-privilege execution role. - Microsoft’s SQL MCP Server documentation describes a governed interface based on configured tools, entities, roles, and constraints rather than exposing raw schema and relying only on generated SQL. The documented applicability includes SQL Server 2025 (17.x) and listed Azure SQL products; see [Microsoft Learn](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/sql-server/ai/intelligent-applications).
- Oracle’s example separates syntax validation from query execution.
- AWS recommends evaluating generated queries before using them in a workload.
When designing a production system, specify which metadata users and agents can see, which rows and columns they can query, which SQL operations are allowed, whether queries require review, and how execution is audited. The right controls depend on the database and deployment.
Implementation patterns and how to compare them
“Knowledge layer” describes a role in the architecture, not one required product or a requirement to use a graph database. Implementations can combine indexed metadata, semantic search, comments, curated SQL, ontology abstractions, or governed database tools.
| Pattern | What it provides | Documented qualification |
|---|---|---|
| EDB Postgres AI Database v7 semantic KB and text-to-SQL | Searchable schema and comments, agent schema-search tools, SQL generation and execution, and semantic aliases for recurring questions. | The text-to-SQL documentation identifies version 7 and was modified 2026-08-26. |
| Amazon Bedrock structured-data knowledge bases | Natural-language-to-SQL generation for a connected structured data source, with query generation separable from retrieval. | AWS says generated-query accuracy varies and recommends evaluation before workload use. |
| Oracle OCI SQL-agent reference architecture | A router, schema manager, SQL generator, cache, executor, and analyzer; schema search and reranking narrow candidate tables, followed by syntax validation. | The reference describes schemas with hundreds of tables as a design target, not a measured capacity benchmark. |
| Microsoft SQL MCP Server | A configured tool interface with entities, roles, and constraints governing database access. | Microsoft lists SQL Server 2025 (17.x) and specified Azure SQL products. |
| AWS Virtual Knowledge Graph guidance | An ontology-based approach that can translate SPARQL over relational data into SQL and combine virtualized structured sources with materialized semantic knowledge. | This is a broader enterprise knowledge architecture and may exceed the needs of a straightforward SQL agent. |
For any approach, compare what it indexes (schema, content, business terms, or a combination), how well it finds relevant definitions and joins, how schema changes are refreshed, whether recurring questions can use reviewed SQL, and how queries are constrained and evaluated. Also check support for the target database and query patterns, plus operational needs such as caching, observability, and result limits. These are evaluation criteria, not a published comparative benchmark; the cited vendor documentation does not establish a performance winner.
