Yes—you can run a coding agent on infrastructure you control and start work from a GitHub issue. The main choice is whether you want a ready-made agent platform such as OpenHands Agent Canvas, a focused issue-solving agent, or a custom GitHub Actions workflow on a self-hosted runner. These options differ in how much issue automation they provide and how much setup, security, and maintenance you take on.

Which self-hosted approach fits your workflow?

An agent platform coordinates coding agents and event-driven automations. An issue-solving agent focuses on attempting repository changes from a task. A self-hosted Actions runner supplies a machine for jobs, but it does not supply the agent or issue-to-pull-request workflow by itself.

Approach Best fit Issue and pull request workflow Main trade-off
OpenHands Agent Canvas A control center for agents, backends, and event automations Official materials list issue-to-pull-request and other GitHub automations, with local, Docker, and VM/cloud deployment paths. OpenHands repository Broader setup and host-security responsibilities; check current documentation as integrations and packaging may change.
SWE-agent / mini-SWE-agent A focused agent that attempts a software task from an issue SWE-agent describes taking a GitHub issue and attempting a fix. Its repository says mini-SWE-agent has superseded it for most current development and recommends mini-SWE-agent going forward. SWE-agent repository Use the maintainers’ current direction rather than treating SWE-agent as the default; verify mini-SWE-agent’s current deployment details before adopting it.
GitHub Actions self-hosted runner + chosen agent A team that already operates Actions and wants to build a custom flow GitHub Actions runs jobs on a machine you manage; issue selection, agent configuration, and PR behavior are part of the workflow you build. GitHub Docs: About self-hosted runners You retain more control, but also own more workflow integration and machine maintenance.

There is no independent head-to-head benchmark in the cited materials that establishes which option fixes issues best. Choose by the amount of orchestration you want, where code should execute, the credential and network boundaries you can enforce, and who will maintain the host.

OpenHands Agent Canvas: the broader platform option

OpenHands presents Agent Canvas as a self-hosted control center that can run OpenHands and external coding agents. Its current OpenHands repository describes local execution, Docker, multiple Docker sandboxes, and VM or cloud backends, along with issue decomposition and event-driven integrations. Its listed automations include “Issue to Pull Request,” “GitHub PR Review Assistant,” and “GitHub Repository Monitor.”

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Start with the current OpenHands repository and its documentation, not the older standalone Agent Canvas repository: the standalone repository is archived and points to OpenHands/OpenHands.

Choose an execution boundary deliberately

In an unsandboxed installation, the agent server runs on the installation machine and has full access to its filesystem. In the Docker setup, project directories mounted for the agent are accessible to it. Separate Docker sandboxes can isolate conversation execution, but conversations using the same host workspace still share files. Docker changes the boundary; it does not make a shared workspace or a powerful agent automatically safe. See the OpenHands setup documentation for current deployment details.

Keep the host available if work must continue offline

A self-hosted VM or dedicated machine can remain available while your laptop is shut down. OpenHands names a cloud VM and a Mac mini as example host choices; neither is a requirement, and the cited guidance does not establish a particular computer configuration. Its 2026 VM documentation says 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM is enough for a single user on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Treat that as OpenHands’ stated example, not a general minimum or a guarantee for concurrent tasks, other agent stacks, or local model inference. OpenHands self-hosting guide

SWE-agent and mini-SWE-agent: focused issue solving

If the goal is specifically to give an agent a repository issue and have it attempt a fix, SWE-agent’s own project description matches that workflow. However, the same repository says mini-SWE-agent has superseded SWE-agent for most current development and recommends using mini-SWE-agent going forward. Check the maintainers’ notice in the SWE-agent repository before choosing the older project.

The cited project information establishes that recommendation, but not a complete current installation or operations guide for mini-SWE-agent. Confirm its current setup, supported environments, and security model in its own documentation before putting it on a server; do not assume it provides OpenHands-style event orchestration or a ready-made PR workflow.

GitHub Actions self-hosted runner: build the workflow yourself

GitHub defines a self-hosted runner as “a system that you deploy and manage to execute jobs from GitHub Actions on GitHub.” Runners can be physical or virtual machines, containers, on-premises hosts, or cloud resources. They give you more control over hardware, operating system, and installed software, while leaving you responsible for maintaining the machine and its software. GitHub Docs: About self-hosted runners

This is a useful building block when you already operate CI or need a custom trigger and execution environment. It is not, on its own, an issue-solving agent: you still need to select and configure an agent, define how issue events are accepted, manage credentials, and decide how proposed changes become a pull request.

Self-hosted agent does not necessarily mean local AI

Hosting the agent service and running the model locally are separate decisions. OpenHands’ ACP documentation lists external agent CLIs including Claude Code, Codex, and Gemini CLI. The server launches the chosen CLI and relays turns; the CLI manages its own model and tools. Depending on the backend, a CLI may use an existing provider login or require an API key in a clean cloud sandbox. That is an authentication detail, not a promise of included or free model access, and the reviewed material does not establish that inference stays on your machine. OpenHands ACP documentation

Security checks before connecting GitHub issues

“Self-hosted” describes who manages the execution environment; it does not by itself establish a safe boundary for code, credentials, or network access. OpenHands warns that its agent can read and write the host filesystem, execute shell commands, and access the network. It also warns that anyone who can reach the agent server can invoke those capabilities. OpenHands self-hosting guide OpenHands security documentation

  • Restrict access to the agent service. Use strong access controls and firewall rules; do not expose an agent endpoint as an unauthenticated public service.
  • Protect API keys and provider logins. Give the agent only the credentials its task needs, and account for the fact that an agent with shell access can use credentials available to its environment.
  • Limit filesystem and repository access. Mount or check out only the workspaces the task requires, especially when using Docker or a shared host.
  • Separate concurrent jobs and workspaces. OpenHands notes that conversations sharing one host workspace share its files, even when separate Docker sandboxes are used for execution.
  • Plan network access explicitly. A shell-capable agent with network access can reach external services; apply restrictions appropriate to the repositories and credentials involved.

A practical way to choose

  1. Choose OpenHands Agent Canvas if you want a central platform with documented issue/event automations and are prepared to configure and secure its backend.
  2. Investigate mini-SWE-agent if your primary need is an agent attempting repository tasks from issues, and verify its current installation and operational details before deployment.
  3. Use a self-hosted Actions runner with an agent if your team wants to assemble a custom workflow around existing CI practices and accepts responsibility for its triggers, agent integration, and maintenance.
  4. Decide where it runs. Use a laptop for work that can stop when you do, or an always-on VM or dedicated host when issue-triggered jobs must continue while your computer is off.
  5. Set the isolation and credential policy before enabling issue triggers. Decide what files, repositories, network destinations, and secrets a task can reach, and who can reach the agent endpoint.
