How to Close Firefox Split View Without Closing Either Website

Right-click the Firefox Split View tab and choose Separate Tabs to keep both websites open in separate tabs.

Right-click the Split View tab in Firefox and choose Separate Tabs. Firefox ends the side-by-side layout and leaves both websites open in separate tabs.

Separate the tabs without closing either website

  1. Find the tab representing the Split View in Firefox’s tab bar.
  2. Right-click the tab to open its context menu. On a device or setup that uses a Control-click for a right-click, use that instead.
  3. Choose Separate Tabs.
  4. Check the tab bar: both pages should now be open as separate tabs.

Mozilla identifies Separate Tabs in the tab’s right-click menu. The address-bar Split View icon and the three-dot control in the Split View footer also provide Split View controls, but Mozilla does not identify them as places to find this specific command. Mozilla’s Split View help article covers the feature and its controls.

Choose the command that matches what you want

Action What happens
Separate Tabs Ends Split View and keeps both pages open as separate tabs.
Close Both Tabs Closes both pages.
Close one tab in the pair Ends Split View and closes the selected tab; the other page remains open.

For the goal of keeping both websites open, use Separate Tabs, not Close Both Tabs.

Firefox Split View availability and tab recovery

Mozilla says Split View is available starting with Firefox 149. It displays two tabs side by side in one Firefox window, supports two tabs at a time, and does not support pinned tabs. If Firefox is set to open previous windows and tabs, Split Views are restored with the window. Mozilla says a Split View cannot be restored by reopening closed tabs with the usual reopen-closed-tabs shortcut, so do not rely on that shortcut to recover a pair after closing it. See Mozilla Support: Split View in Firefox for the current feature details.
