In Java’s virtual machine, the stack is private to each thread and holds method-call frames; the heap is shared and provides storage for class instances and arrays. A local variable can hold a reference to an object without being the object itself. These are roles in the JVM’s abstract runtime model—not a guarantee that every JVM uses two fixed, physically separate memory regions.
What is the difference between the Java heap and stack?
| Aspect | JVM stack | JVM heap |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership | Each JVM thread has its own private stack. | Shared among JVM threads. |
| Specified role | Stores frames used for method invocation and return. | Provides runtime allocation for class instances and arrays. |
| What it contains | Each frame has a local-variable array, an operand stack, and a reference to the current method’s run-time constant pool. | Storage for objects and arrays; the JVM specification does not prescribe a particular internal object structure. |
| Lifetime and reclamation | A frame is created on method invocation and discarded when the invocation completes, normally or abruptly. | Storage is reclaimed by an automatic storage-management system when the JVM implementation determines it can be reclaimed. |
| Related errors | Exceeding the permitted stack capacity can cause StackOverflowError; stack creation or expansion can also cause OutOfMemoryError in specified circumstances. |
OutOfMemoryError can occur if the automatic storage-management system cannot provide enough heap memory. |
The Java SE 21 specification describes the heap as “the run-time data area from which memory for all class instances and arrays is allocated.” It also specifies that the heap is shared, while each thread has its own JVM stack. Oracle, Java Virtual Machine Specification, Java SE 21 Edition, Chapter 2.
What happens during a method call?
A frame is created for the invocation
When a method is invoked, the JVM creates a frame on the stack belonging to the thread making the call. The frame holds the method’s local-variable array and operand stack, which the JVM uses while executing that method. When the invocation completes—whether normally or abruptly—the frame is discarded.
Local variables can hold references
A local-variable slot may contain a reference value that refers to an object. The slot and reference are not the same thing as the object: the abstract JVM model allocates class instances and arrays from the heap. This distinction is why “local variables are on the stack, objects are on the heap” can be a useful introductory shorthand, but it should not be mistaken for a complete description of every value or a promise about a particular JVM’s physical memory layout.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Are Java objects always physically stored on the heap?
The specification defines abstract runtime areas and their roles, not a universal hardware-level map. It does not require the heap or stack to occupy one contiguous physical region, and it permits frames to be heap allocated. Therefore, the specification supports saying that the JVM heap is the allocation area for instances and arrays in its abstract model; it does not establish that every object must appear in a distinct, physically identifiable heap region in every implementation or under every optimization.
Likewise, do not infer a particular garbage-collection algorithm, object layout, or physical representation of a reference from the abstract model. Those details depend on the JVM implementation; the Java SE 21 specification leaves them to implementors.

How does garbage collection differ from stack cleanup?
A method frame has a clear invocation-based lifetime: it is discarded when that invocation ends. Heap storage follows a different rule. The JVM uses automatic storage management, such as garbage collection, to reclaim heap memory when the implementation determines that memory can be reclaimed. The specification does not prescribe one collection algorithm or say that an object is reclaimed immediately when a method returns.
What causes StackOverflowError versus OutOfMemoryError?
StackOverflowError
A thread that needs more JVM stack than the permitted amount receives StackOverflowError. This is a stack-capacity failure, not the same condition as running out of heap space.

OutOfMemoryError
If automatic storage management cannot make enough heap memory available for an allocation, the JVM throws OutOfMemoryError. The specification also allows this error in specified circumstances when a JVM cannot create or expand a stack. The error name alone therefore does not prove that the heap was the failing area; use the exception context and JVM-specific diagnostics to investigate a particular failure.
Is the Java stack shared between threads?
No. Each JVM thread has its own private stack, so its method-call frames belong to that thread. The heap, by contrast, is shared among JVM threads. This is the JVM-level distinction; it does not by itself describe the synchronization or thread-safety of objects shared through the heap.
