Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo accept a PATCH value such as 0 or false, track whether the JSON field was supplied separately from validating its value. Avoid binding:"required" on optional scalar fields: Gin’s validator treats a scalar’s zero value as missing. A pointer-based request DTO is the simplest option when omitted and null can share the same meaning; use explicit presence tracking when they cannot.
Why ordinary scalar fields cause trouble
After decoding JSON into a Go struct with plain int, bool, or string fields, an omitted member has the type’s zero value: 0, false, or "". Those same values can also be supplied explicitly, so the decoded field alone does not tell you whether the client sent it. For PATCH, that distinction matters: omission commonly means “leave unchanged,” while an explicit zero value means “set it to zero.”
The json:"field,omitempty" tag does not solve incoming presence detection. In Go’s encoding/json documentation, omitempty controls omission when encoding JSON; it is not a record of which members appeared in the request.
Use pointer fields for the common two-state case
If your API treats JSON null the same as omission, pointers provide a concise, typed way to tell absent-like input from a supplied value. A non-nil pointer preserves explicit 0, false, and "".

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
type PatchUser struct {
Age *int `json:"age"`
Active *bool `json:"active"`
Name *string `json:"name"`
}
With this shape, check for presence before validating or applying a field:
func patchUser(c *gin.Context) {
var req PatchUser
if err := c.ShouldBindJSON(&req); err != nil {
c.JSON(http.StatusBadRequest, gin.H{"error": err.Error()})
return
}
if req.Age != nil {
if *req.Age < 0 {
c.JSON(http.StatusUnprocessableEntity, gin.H{"error": "age must be non-negative"})
return
}
// Apply *req.Age, including 0.
}
if req.Active != nil {
// Apply *req.Active, including false.
}
if req.Name != nil {
// Apply *req.Name if an empty string is allowed by the API.
}
}
This is an implementation pattern, not a complete endpoint: add the validation and persistence logic your API needs. The key is to validate the concrete value only after confirming that the field was supplied. For example, reject a negative age if present, but do not treat an omitted age as zero and update it.

Handle null according to the PATCH contract
A pointer distinguishes an absent-like field from a concrete value, but it does not necessarily distinguish an omitted JSON member from a member explicitly set to null. Decide what null means for each field and document that contract. It may mean “clear,” be invalid, or be treated like omission.
When null and omission have the same meaning
The pointer DTO is usually sufficient: a nil pointer means there is no concrete value to validate or apply. Keep the API’s null policy explicit so clients know that null will not clear the field if it is treated as omission.

When null means clear
Represent the three states—omitted (leave unchanged), null (clear), and concrete value (set)—with a custom optional type, or inspect the JSON object before decoding its values into a typed DTO. One approach is decoding into map[string]json.RawMessage to check which keys appeared, then interpreting each present value, including null, according to the contract. Keep presence separate from the decoded value so an explicit zero remains a set operation.
Choose validation tags with presence in mind
Gin uses go-playground/validator/v10 for binding validation. Its required rule rejects a field’s default zero value, including 0, false, and "". That rule is appropriate for values that truly must be non-zero or non-empty, not optional PATCH scalars where zero is meaningful. See Gin’s model binding and validation documentation and the validator’s tag documentation.

binding:"required"requires a non-zero value; it will reject a valid explicit zero.- Validator’s
omitemptyskips later validation rules when the field is unset. This is different fromjson:"...,omitempty", which affects JSON encoding. omitnilskips checks for nil values.omitzeroskips zero values and, for pointers, also checks the pointed-to value. Avoidomitzerowhen a supplied zero must be validated or applied.
For PATCH fields, conditional checks after a presence test are often clearest. For reusable complex rules, Gin supports custom validators, including struct-level validation; preserve the distinction between an omitted field and a supplied zero when writing those rules.

Gin provides binders for JSON, XML, YAML, and standard form data. Its Bind and BindJSON methods abort and write a 400 response when binding fails. ShouldBind and ShouldBindJSON return the error to your handler, which lets you choose the response status and error body. For an API with a deliberate 400-versus-422 policy or structured error responses, use ShouldBindJSON and handle the error explicitly, as in the example.

Check the cases your endpoint must support
- Omitted field: leave the stored value unchanged.
- Explicit
0orfalse: recognize it as supplied and apply it if valid. - Explicit empty string: accept or reject it according to the field’s rules, not as a sign of absence.
null: follow the documented policy—leave unchanged, clear, or reject.- Malformed JSON: return a binding error without applying a partial update.
- Invalid supplied value: return a validation error without treating the field as omitted.
