1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf an E6B gives you a heading or groundspeed that looks wrong, first check what each number represents, then verify the four wind-side inputs and how your particular calculator expects you to read its result. The wind triangle describes how the aircraft’s motion through the air combines with wind to produce its path and speed over the ground; it does not, by itself, confirm that an aircraft is on course.
Why wind changes heading and groundspeed
The wind triangle is a vector explanation of how wind affects flight and is a basis of dead reckoning, as described in the Federal Aviation Administration’s Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, chapter 16, “Navigation.” The planned course is a path over the ground. Wind moves the aircraft along with the surrounding air mass, so the aircraft may need to point into the wind to keep its ground path on the planned course.
The same relationship affects speed over the ground. A headwind reduces progress along the course; a tailwind increases it. The FAA describes heading and groundspeed as wind-adjusted quantities used in dead reckoning, including estimating arrival time at a checkpoint or destination. See the FAA handbook page for the Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, identified as FAA-H-8083-25C; the page lists chapter 16 and reports it was last updated November 3, 2023.
Know which quantity you are checking
- Course: the intended direction of travel over the ground.
- Heading: the direction the aircraft’s nose is pointed. Wind may make heading different from the intended course.
- True airspeed (TAS): the aircraft’s speed through the air.
- Groundspeed (GS): the aircraft’s speed over the ground.
With no wind, ground track and heading match, and groundspeed and true airspeed match. The FAA puts it this way: “If there is no wind, the aircraft’s ground track is the same as the heading and the GS is the same as the true airspeed.” With wind, those pairs generally differ. A calculated heading therefore should not be expected to equal the course in every wind condition, and groundspeed should not be expected to equal TAS.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Confirm the four E6-B wind-side inputs
ASA’s E6-B Circular Instructions identify four inputs for the wind-side calculation:
- True course: the intended ground path, expressed as a true course.
- True airspeed: the aircraft’s speed through the air.
- True wind direction: the direction from which the wind is reported, in the reference frame expected by the calculator.
- Wind velocity: the wind speed.
Use the plotting and reading procedure in the instructions for your specific E6-B or electronic flight computer. Mechanical and electronic designs can differ, so knob positions, scale alignment, and readout conventions should not be assumed to transfer from one model to another. The FAA handbook discusses both types of flight computer, but the device-specific procedure belongs to the particular model’s instructions.

A practical check when the answer looks wrong
This is a troubleshooting order derived from the inputs that drive the calculation, not an official FAA checklist. Work through it before deciding that the calculator is faulty:
- Check the intended course. Make sure the value entered is the planned true course, not a heading or a magnetic value entered where true course is expected.
- Check true airspeed. Confirm that you used TAS, not indicated airspeed or groundspeed.
- Check wind direction and speed. Verify both values against the wind information you are using and ensure direction and speed have not been transposed.
- Check the direction reference. Confirm that wind direction is expressed in the reference frame the selected calculator expects. Do not assume every device uses the same convention.
- Check the readout. Follow that model’s instructions to identify the wind correction angle, resulting heading, and groundspeed. Make sure you are reading the intended scale or display field.
A result that seems surprising is a reason to inspect the inputs and definitions; it does not establish which, if any, mistake occurred. The sources do not rank E6B user errors or specify a universal acceptable tolerance.

What an E6B result can—and cannot—tell you
An E6B wind-side calculation helps relate a planned ground course and wind to a heading and groundspeed estimate. It is a planning calculation, not confirmation that an aircraft is tracking the intended path in flight. If the planned heading conflicts with cockpit indications or observed navigation, follow the aircraft’s approved procedures, current flight information, and qualified instruction.
A mechanical or electronic flight computer can be used to practice the calculation; neither is established here as more accurate, safer, or universally preferable. Treat the E6B as a calculation aid rather than required equipment or a substitute for flight-planning checks.
