That extra range comes with more mechanical and control complexity. A two-finger parallel gripper can still handle demanding tasks when its jaws suit the object. And “pincer” usually describes a way of grasping, not a separate finger-count category.
What is the difference between a robot hand, a gripper, and a pincer?
A five-finger dexterous hand has several articulated digits, typically including an opposing thumb. It may use tendons, linkages, or another actuator arrangement. With suitable control, the digits can make different contact patterns, including fingertip pinch and multi-finger grasps.
A two-finger parallel gripper has two opposing jaws that close along a broadly parallel path. It is a simpler end effector suited to many pick-and-place and fixture-like tasks. Its fingers generally offer fewer ways to change contact points or manipulate an object while holding it.
A pincer or pinch grasp is a contact pattern: opposing surfaces, often fingertips, hold an object. A multi-finger hand can pinch with its thumb and another digit; a two-jaw gripper can also close in a pincer-like way. The word does not, by itself, tell you how many fingers a device has or how stable its grasp will be.

| Type | What it is | Potential strengths | Questions to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Five-finger dexterous hand | Several articulated digits, usually with an opposing thumb | More possible contact patterns, including tip pinch, tripod, and other multi-contact grasps | Which joints are actively driven? What sensing and force control are available? Are demonstrated tasks representative of yours? |
| Two-finger parallel gripper | Two opposing jaws that close along a broadly parallel path | Simpler mechanics and a good fit for many pick-and-place or fixture-like tasks | What are the jaw travel, fingertip shape, force control, sensing, and object-size range? |
| Pincer or pinch grasp | A grasp pattern using opposing contacts, often at the fingertips | Can hold small or precise objects; possible with either of the hardware types above | Is the grasp stable for the object and task, and how precisely can contact force be controlled? |
Is a five-finger robot hand better than a two-finger gripper?
Not in every application. A five-finger hand offers more possible contact arrangements, but additional joints and sensing can also mean more hardware and control complexity. The number of fingers alone does not establish capability: actuation, sensing, software, and task demonstrations matter.
Google DeepMind says its Gemini Robotics 2 system controlled a five-finger, 22-degree-of-freedom SharpaWave hand on an Apptronik Apollo 2 humanoid for delicate actions such as tying knots and sealing a ziplock bag. The same announcement describes the system operating a standard two-finger parallel gripper on a Franka Duo platform for tight packing. Those examples show different task fits; they are company descriptions, not an independent head-to-head trial, and they do not establish performance across all objects or gripper designs. What tasks suit a two-finger gripper or a pinch grasp?
A parallel gripper is often a practical choice when an object can be held securely between two opposing jaws and the task does not require frequent in-hand reorientation. The tight-packing example in Google DeepMind’s announcement shows that a two-finger gripper is not limited to trivial demonstrations, but it does not establish results for other systems or tasks.
A pinch grasp can be useful when opposing contacts at small or precise points suit the object. It can be made by a multi-finger hand or a gripper; stability and precision depend on the contact surfaces, force control, object, and task. A five-finger hand is worth considering when the work calls for multiple contact patterns, thumb opposition, or manipulation that benefits from repositioning contacts—not simply because the target is a humanoid robot.

How to compare hands and grippers for a real application
Compare candidates on the same task and object set when possible. A product’s finger count or headline force figure cannot substitute for a relevant demonstration under known conditions.
- Task fit: Distinguish stable holding and pick-and-place from in-hand reorientation, tool use, or delicate manipulation.
- Kinematics: Check finger count, active versus passive joints, thumb opposition, and which grasp types are reachable.
- Force and delicacy: Look for fingertip and total grasp force, controllability, limits, and the conditions behind each measurement.
- Sensing: Identify force, tactile, proximity, and position sensors, and whether their data are available to the controller.
- Actuation and maintenance: Ask whether the design is tendon-driven, linkage-driven, direct-drive, or another type, and what repair and service it requires.
- Integration: Confirm wrist interface, communication bus, supported software or ROS integration, control rate, and compatibility with the robot arm’s payload.
- Size and durability: Compare dimensions and mass, permitted load, cycle-test protocol, and impact tolerance.
- Evidence and procurement: Record specification version and date; distinguish manufacturer claims from independent testing; verify availability and total system cost with the supplier.
What current specifications do not tell you
The published examples do not provide a controlled benchmark between a five-finger hand and a two-finger gripper, or establish one architecture as the better choice across tasks. Their force, movement, and durability figures use different definitions or test conditions, so comparing the numbers directly can mislead. The cited material also does not establish current prices or a complete market picture. For procurement, verify the exact hardware version, test protocol, integration requirements, and commercial terms with the manufacturer or supplier.
