Debounce an event handler when events arrive in quick succession and the work only needs to happen once after activity pauses. For example, wait until a user pauses typing before filtering results or requesting search suggestions. If the work must keep running while activity continues, throttling or frame-aware scheduling is usually a better fit.
What debouncing does
A debounced function waits for a quiet interval before running. Every new call restarts that wait, so a burst of calls can be consolidated into a single invocation after the calls stop. As MDN explains in its Debounce glossary, throttling limits continuous operations, while debouncing waits for invocations to stop.
This is useful when intermediate event values do not need their own result. A search field, for instance, can defer filtering or a suggestions request until the user pauses rather than starting work for every keystroke.
Choose based on when the work should happen
| Situation | Suitable choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Filtering or search suggestions after typing | Trailing debounce | Intermediate values can be skipped; run after the user pauses. |
| Respond immediately at the start of activity, optionally with a settled update | Leading or combined-edge debounce | The desired feedback determines the edge; implementations differ in their exact behavior. |
| Periodic updates during continuous scrolling or resizing | Throttle or frame-aware scheduling | Work continues during activity rather than waiting indefinitely for a pause. |
| One action after scrolling has completed | scrollend, where appropriate |
The event expresses completion intent directly. |
| A short, inexpensive handler that must respond to every event | Usually no debounce | Debouncing would add latency and omit intermediate invocations without a corresponding benefit. |
Debouncing input events
For typing-driven behavior, attach a retained debounced callback to the input event. The browser’s input event generally corresponds to user-initiated value changes; setting an element’s .value programmatically does not itself fire input.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Create the debounced wrapper once and reuse it for events. Creating a new wrapper inside the event listener defeats the shared wait period because each wrapper maintains its own pending timer. Ensure the chosen utility preserves the latest arguments and, if your code needs it, the correct receiver.
Debouncing scroll work
MDN’s guidance for the scroll event cautions against expensive work, such as DOM modifications, in a high-rate scroll handler. If the task is specifically to run after scrolling finishes, consider scrollend where it is appropriate for your target browsers and application. If progress must update during scrolling, use throttling or frame-aware scheduling instead of a trailing-only debounce, which can keep postponing work until scrolling stops.

Passive listener options do not debounce or throttle a callback. They affect whether a listener can cancel the default behavior: a passive listener promises not to call preventDefault(). This matters for cancelable events such as some wheel and touch events; the basic scroll event itself cannot be canceled. See MDN’s addEventListener() documentation.
Choose edges and a wait interval deliberately
A trailing invocation runs after the quiet interval and provides a result based on settled activity. A leading invocation can respond immediately at the start of a burst. Some utilities support both, but their precise edge behavior depends on the implementation. Lodash’s _.debounce documentation describes its leading and trailing options and provides cancel() to discard a pending call and flush() to run it immediately.

There is no universally correct millisecond delay. Choose a wait interval that balances perceived responsiveness with the interaction’s typical pause pattern, then evaluate it in the application. The right value is a product decision, not a general JavaScript constant.
