Then compare only the capacities offered for the exact model you want. There is no universal “average user” tier: Apple does not publish a fit calculator or a storage threshold for different types of users.
How to choose the right iPhone storage size
- Check your current use. On your iPhone, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Note how much space is used and which categories or apps account for it.
- Identify what needs to stay on the phone. Consider photos and videos, downloaded music or shows, large games, creative apps, and other files you want available without an internet connection. Apple notes that photos, music, apps, and other content use device storage (Manage your photo and video storage).
- Allow for likely growth. Think about whether you expect to take more photos or video, add large apps, or keep the next phone longer. Your current use is a practical starting point, not a guarantee of future needs.
- Check the capacities offered for your model. Tiers differ between iPhone models. Apple’s iPhone model identification page lists capacity options by model; check it for the latest options and confirm availability in your market.
- Compare the added cost with the convenience. If you are choosing between two capacities, weigh the price difference against keeping more content locally and doing less cleanup. There is no evidence-based tier that applies to every user with the same label, such as “light” or “heavy.”
What capacities are available?
Capacity is model-specific, so do not assume that every iPhone comes in every size. Apple’s 2026 Environmental Progress Report lists configurations for products sold as of March 11, 2026. For the iPhone 17 models shown below, the listed options are:

Is 128GB enough for an iPhone?
It may be enough if your current use is modest, you do not keep much media or many large apps on the phone, and you are comfortable managing storage. It may feel restrictive if you regularly record lots of video, download media for offline use, install large games, or want to keep a large collection locally. Check whether 128GB is offered for the specific model you are considering; it is not available across every model or lineup.

Should you get 256GB or 512GB?
Use your current storage breakdown and expected habits to decide. If your phone already uses a large share of its capacity, or you expect your local photo, video, app, or download collection to grow, the larger option can reduce the need to remove content. If you routinely have ample free space and are comfortable using cloud services or deleting downloads, the smaller option may be adequate. Compare the actual price difference for the model and region you intend to buy; a larger tier is useful only if its extra local space is worth the cost to you.
Does iCloud storage increase iPhone capacity?
No. iPhone storage is built into the device; iCloud storage is online space for things such as photos, files, notes, backups, and synced data. Buying more iCloud storage does not add capacity to the iPhone. Apple says new iCloud setups include 5GB of free storage, which can be used for backups, iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive, and more. If iCloud storage fills, the device will not back up to iCloud and new photos and videos will not upload to iCloud Photos (Manage your iCloud storage on your Apple device).

When iCloud Photos can help
With Optimize iPhone Storage enabled, iCloud Photos can keep smaller, space-saving versions on the device while the full-resolution originals remain in iCloud and can be accessed when needed. This can free local space, but it is a storage-management option, not a larger internal drive. It also depends on having enough iCloud storage for your photo library and a connection when full-resolution originals are needed. See Apple’s photo and video storage guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is less space available than the advertised capacity?
The advertised capacity and the amount shown as available in software can differ because storage is measured and displayed using different unit conventions. The operating system and stored content also take up space, so the entire advertised figure is not free for your files. Apple explains the capacity measurement difference in its storage capacity guidance.
