When code produces the wrong result and the cause is unclear, stop making speculative edits. First describe the gap between what you expected and what happened; then reduce it to a case you can reproduce and inspect. Microsoft’s beginner guide recommends asking, “What did you expect your code to do?” and “What happened instead?” (Microsoft)
1. Describe the discrepancy before changing code
Write down the expected behavior and the actual behavior in concrete terms. Include the input, steps, and environment associated with the result when you know them. “The page is broken” is hard to investigate; “with this input, the function returns an empty list, but I expected three items” gives you something specific to verify.
- Expected: What should the program return, display, save, or do?
- Actual: What did it return or do instead? Record the exact error message if there is one.
- Conditions: What input, sequence of actions, environment, or timing preceded the behavior?
Microsoft’s guide describes debugging as stepping through code to find where a programming mistake occurred, not as a way to make a tool reveal every bug automatically. The guide puts it plainly: “A debugger, unfortunately, isn’t something that can magically reveal all the problems or “bugs” in our code.”
2. Reduce the problem to a reproducible case
Try to find the smallest input or sequence of actions that still produces the wrong result. Remove unrelated setup where possible, but confirm that the reduced case still shows the same symptom. A compact reproducer makes it easier to inspect the relevant execution path and check whether a change actually helped.

If the issue is intermittent, do not pretend that every failure has a simple minimal example. Keep a record of what happened each time: inputs, actions, environment, timing, and whether the failure appeared. Change one variable at a time so you can tell which condition affects the result.
3. Locate the first point where execution diverges
Work from a point where the program behaves as expected toward the point where it does not. Set a breakpoint near the transition, run the reproducer, and inspect the values that should be correct there. Then step through the relevant code and watch for the first unexpected value or decision.
For example, if a function receives the right input but returns the wrong result, inspect the input at entry, the values used in its key branches, and the value just before it returns. The goal is not to examine everything; it is to find the earliest place where observed execution no longer matches your expectation. Microsoft’s beginner documentation explains how stepping through code and watching variable changes can help reveal when an incorrect value is assigned. Read its debugging overview.
4. Test one explanation at a time
Once you have a suspicious point, write down a plausible cause and what observation would support or weaken it. Then use a breakpoint, logpoint, or focused diagnostic output to test that explanation. Avoid changing several things at once: if the symptom changes, you will not know which change mattered.

In VS Code’s Python debugging tools, ordinary and conditional breakpoints can pause execution at selected locations or under a condition, while logpoints can record diagnostic messages without the same kind of pause. The exact setup depends on the project and environment. VS Code’s Python Debugger documentation covers these options and launch configurations.
5. Choose an observation tool that fits your environment
A graphical debugger can pause execution, step over or into code, and expose runtime values. Before choosing one, check that it supports your language, runtime, editor, and operating system; that you can reproduce the behavior or attach to the relevant process; and that you know how its breakpoints and state views work. There is no universal best debugger independent of those needs.

For Python in VS Code
Microsoft’s Python Debugger documentation describes support for scripts and several application types, along with launch configurations, breakpoints, conditional breakpoints, and logpoints. Setup depends on the project and environment, so follow the documentation for the way the application is launched or attached.
For Python without relying on an editor debugger
Python includes pdb, an interactive source debugger. The Python 3.14.8 documentation describes post-mortem debugging and attaching to an existing process as supported use cases. Those are Python-specific options; for another language, use the official debugger documentation for that language and runtime. Python 3.14.8: The Python Debugger.

For AI-assisted debugging in Visual Studio
Microsoft documents a product-specific Debugger Agent in Visual Studio that can work through reproduction, instrumentation, runtime validation, and a targeted correction, followed by human validation. Treat it as an aid, not a guarantee: that documentation does not establish that AI can reliably diagnose every codebase or that the feature is available in every version, plan, or environment. Microsoft’s Debugger Agent documentation describes the feature.

After making a change, rerun the reproducer with the same relevant conditions. Check that the observed behavior now matches the expectation you wrote down; a plausible-looking edit is not proof that the problem is fixed. Where suitable, preserve the case as a regression test so a future change can catch the same failure.
