CDP commands ask Chrome or Edge to do something; CDP events let code respond to browser activity. It is useful when you need a capability available through the protocol, but it is not a stable, cross-browser testing API. Selenium positions WebDriver BiDi as its standards-based direction for bidirectional automation.
What is CDP in Selenium?
The Chrome DevTools Protocol is the browser protocol used by Chrome DevTools. Selenium provides ways to send CDP commands through Chrome and Edge drivers, along with generated APIs for commonly used protocol domains. This gives a Selenium test access to certain browser functions beyond the standard WebDriver interface.
CDP is not itself a browser-independent Selenium standard. Selenium cautions that the protocol was not designed as a stable testing API and that its functionality depends heavily on browser version. Use it for a specific browser capability, not as a guarantee that the same code will work unchanged across browsers or releases. Selenium’s CDP documentation describes the supported approaches and their limitations.
How Selenium uses CDP commands and events
Commands perform an operation
A CDP command sends a named operation and its parameters to the browser. Selenium’s documented example uses Network.setCookie to set a cookie, then navigates and reads the cookie using WebDriver. This illustrates how CDP can supplement an ordinary WebDriver sequence: use the protocol for the browser-specific operation, then continue with standard WebDriver interactions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
With a basic command method such as executeCdpCommand, your code needs to know the relevant protocol domain, exact command name and parameter names. Selenium notes that this basic access does not support features that require bidirectional communication.
Events report browser activity
CDP also supports event-oriented interaction. Selenium’s Python CDP API documents event listeners and wait-for-event helpers, and models a root connection that can multiplex multiple CDP sessions. These are Python implementation details; do not assume other Selenium language bindings expose identical interfaces.
Why Selenium CDP versions need to match Chrome
CDP implementations and methods can change as browser versions change. Selenium advises keeping Chrome and DevTools versions aligned, and its documentation describes support for the three most recent Chrome versions at any given time. Check the documentation and release notes for the Selenium version you actually use rather than relying on a remembered compatibility range.

For a dated example, Selenium 4.40 was released on January 18, 2026, and listed Chrome DevTools support for versions 144, 143 and 142. That is a release snapshot, not a statement of the current support range. See the Selenium 4.40 release announcement for that release’s details.

Choose based on the capability you need and the browsers you must support. Selenium describes WebDriver BiDi as its standards-based cross-browser direction for bidirectional automation. It uses a WebSocket connection to support two-way communication and streaming browser events. Selenium says CDP support is temporary pending BiDi implementation; BiDi feature availability still depends on the browser and binding implementation. Selenium’s WebDriver BiDi documentation explains its approach.
| Consideration | CDP in Selenium | WebDriver BiDi in Selenium |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Chrome/Chromium-oriented and browser-version-dependent, according to Selenium’s CDP documentation. | Designed as a standards-based cross-browser protocol, according to Selenium’s BiDi documentation. |
| Stability | Selenium says CDP was not designed as a stable testing API. | Selenium’s stated direction is a stable cross-browser API, while implementations continue to evolve. |
| Communication | Basic command methods have limits for bidirectional features; Selenium also documents CDP event APIs. | WebSocket communication supports two-way messaging and event streaming. |
| When to consider it | When a needed browser capability is exposed through CDP and you can manage browser-version compatibility. | When you need cross-browser, event-driven automation and the required feature is available in your browser and binding. |
CDP limitations to account for
- Browser-version coupling: protocol methods and implementations can change, so an upgrade can require compatibility checks.
- Basic commands are not full bidirectional support: a command method alone does not provide every event-driven capability.
- Geolocation may not change a site’s inferred location: emulated geolocation may not affect sites that infer location from the device’s IP address.
- Prefer Chrome Options for mobile emulation: Selenium says its mobile emulation API is generally superior to overriding device metrics through CDP.
These constraints and the protocol’s stability warning are covered in Selenium’s Chrome DevTools Protocol guide.

When a screenshot is the goal rather than browser automation
CDP is useful when your Selenium workflow needs browser control or browser events. If the deliverable is simply a webpage screenshot or PDF, a screenshot API can avoid setting up and maintaining a browser automation flow. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it is an alternative for capture tasks, not a replacement for Selenium CDP when you need to automate browser behavior.
Or skip the browser setup
Make one GET request with a URL to receive an image or PDF. Example using cURL:

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie and consent banners are accepted before capture, and 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets can be removed; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. Code breaks after a browser upgrade
Check the browser version against the CDP support documented for your Selenium release, then consult that release’s notes. Selenium’s supported recent-version window moves over time, so an older compatibility example may no longer apply.
An event listener or wait helper is missing
Confirm which Selenium language binding you are using. Selenium’s documented event listeners and wait-for-event helpers in the CDP API reference are Python-specific implementation details, not a promise of matching interfaces in every binding. The Python CDP API reference describes that API.

A basic command method does not provide the interaction you need
If the feature depends on a two-way connection or streaming events, a basic command call may be insufficient. Check Selenium’s documented event-oriented CDP support or investigate WebDriver BiDi for the browser and binding you target.

Practical decision
- Use CDP when a specific Chrome/Edge capability you need is exposed through the protocol and you can track version compatibility.
- Use standard WebDriver commands for ordinary browser interactions that do not require a CDP-specific capability.
- Evaluate WebDriver BiDi for cross-browser bidirectional automation, checking feature availability for your actual browser and Selenium binding.
- For a screenshot or PDF deliverable without browser automation logic, consider a capture API instead of treating CDP as the goal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Selenium CDP work with every browser?
No. Selenium’s CDP support is browser-oriented and version-dependent; it is not a cross-browser standard.
Are CDP commands part of the WebDriver standard?
No. CDP is Chrome DevTools’ browser protocol; WebDriver BiDi is Selenium’s standards-based direction for bidirectional automation.
