Quality Assurance vs. Quality Control: Differences Explained

QA helps make work processes capable of meeting requirements consistently; QC checks whether a particular result meets them. See how the distinction applies across manufacturing, software, documents, and services.

Quality assurance (QA) focuses on the processes and systems that help work meet requirements consistently; quality control (QC) checks whether a particular product, service, or other output meets them. They serve different but complementary purposes: QA helps make conformity repeatable, while QC provides evidence about the result. The shorthand “QA prevents; QC detects” is useful, but not absolute: QC can happen during work, and a QA system can include checks and feedback.

What is the difference between QA and QC?

The American Society for Quality (ASQ) defines QA as the part of quality management focused on providing confidence that quality requirements will be fulfilled. It defines QC as the part focused on fulfilling those requirements. In practical terms, QA asks whether the work is organized to produce conforming results reliably; QC asks whether this result meets the stated requirements.

Comparison Quality assurance (QA) Quality control (QC)
Main focus Processes, systems, and confidence in repeatable conformity. Whether an output fulfills specified requirements.
Typical question Are we organizing the work so requirements can be met consistently? Does this result meet the stated requirements?
Useful shorthand Process-oriented and preventive. Output-oriented and verification-focused.
Examples Documenting procedures, training, and planning or conducting quality-system and process audits. Measuring, examining, or testing an output and comparing it with requirements.
Relationship ASQ describes QC as typically a subset of QA activities, while noting that the terms are sometimes used interchangeably.

ISO’s practical explanation makes a similar distinction: QA organizes work to prevent problems, while QC checks products or services against specifications. This is a helpful generalization, not a rule that QA only happens before production or QC only happens at the end. Checking during a process can be QC; feedback from checks can also inform the quality system.

Examples of QA and QC

Manufacturing

QA might establish and maintain the production method, responsibilities, and audit approach. QC might measure or test a product and compare the result with its specifications. These examples illustrate the definitions; they do not describe a particular company’s procedures.

Software and document work

QA might define how a team reviews and releases work. QC might inspect a particular software build, report, or deliverable against its acceptance criteria. The distinction is the same: one concerns the repeatability of the work system; the other concerns whether a specific result meets requirements.

Services

A service is not always a tangible thing that can be inspected, but quality control still applies. Documents and physical items used to provide a service can be checked. ASQ gives examples such as a report or a rented item.

Is an audit QA or QC?

An audit and an inspection are related activities, but they are not the same. ASQ describes an audit as a planned, independent, documented assessment against criteria. It can assess a system, process, product, or service; in ASQ’s account, auditing is part of QA. An inspection measures, examines, or tests characteristics against requirements, making it a QC activity. An inspection does not become an audit simply because it is formal or documented.

Why do organizations use both?

A well-designed process can reduce the chance of nonconforming work, but process design alone does not establish that every result meets its requirements. Output checks can identify a failure, but checking alone does not make the underlying work process consistently reliable. Combining QA and QC addresses both questions: how work is organized and whether its outputs conform.

Neither function, by itself, guarantees that every customer requirement will be met. The requirements need to be understood, the process needs to support them, and results need appropriate verification.

Do the terms mean the same thing everywhere?

No. ASQ notes that QA and QC are sometimes used interchangeably, and organizations may draw their responsibilities differently. Treat the process-versus-output distinction as a practical guide, not a universal organizational chart. When a job description, procedure, or contract defines the terms, use that context.

Quality work also does not have to belong exclusively to a department with “quality” in its name. These definitions describe functions, not a rule about which team must perform them.

How do ISO quality standards fit in?

ISO 9000:2015 is the concepts-and-vocabulary reference relevant to these definitions. ISO describes quality as “the degree to which a set of inherent characteristics of an object fulfils requirements” (ISO 9000:2015, clause 3.6.2, as cited in ISO’s overview). The ISO 9000 family provides a quality-management framework; ASQ describes ISO 9001 as the international standard specifying quality-management-system requirements. This context explains the vocabulary—it does not establish that any particular organization is certified or compliant, or that every organization needs certification.

Capturing visual evidence is a separate task

For teams that need a website screenshot as visual evidence during review, ScreenshotNeo is a separate screenshot API and MCP server—not a QA or QC system. It can return a screenshot or PDF from a URL, and its stated options include capturing a selected element, full-page captures with lazy images loaded, and custom CSS or JavaScript. See ScreenshotNeo and its API documentation for details.

Its stated billing rules distinguish clean captures from several failed outcomes: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. These capabilities may help capture evidence; they do not replace defining acceptance criteria or evaluating whether work meets them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is QC always part of QA?

ASQ says QC is typically a subset of QA activities, but also notes that organizations sometimes use the terms interchangeably.

Does QA mean paperwork?

No. Procedures can be one part of QA, but the term covers planned, systematic work across a quality system, including training and audits.
