Use Selenium’s driver.execute_script(script, *args) to run JavaScript in the browser controlled by Python. Return a value from the script with JavaScript’s return statement; use driver.execute_async_script() when the browser-side work finishes later and must signal completion through Selenium’s callback.
Run synchronous JavaScript with execute_script
execute_script runs its JavaScript in the currently selected browser window or frame. Its return value is passed back to Python. For example, find an element with Selenium, pass it as an argument, and return a property:

print(text)This is the basic pattern for reading a value from a page. The Selenium documentation also demonstrates passing a WebElement as an argument to JavaScript: Working with windows and tabs.
Pass Python values safely as script arguments
Supply elements and ordinary values after the script string. In the JavaScript, refer to them as arguments[0], arguments[1], and so on, in the order supplied. This keeps data separate from the script source instead of interpolating values into JavaScript text.

Choose synchronous or asynchronous execution
Use execute_script when the result is ready immediately
For ordinary DOM reads, property assignments, and other snippets whose useful result is available when the JavaScript finishes, use execute_script. Include a JavaScript return statement when Python needs a result. Without a returned value, Python receives no useful script result.

Use execute_async_script when browser-side work completes later
For an operation that finishes asynchronously, use execute_async_script and call the callback Selenium supplies. Selenium appends that callback as the script’s last argument; its first value becomes the result returned to Python.

print(result)Set the script timeout to allow the expected browser-side operation to finish. If the callback is never called, Selenium waits until the script timeout and then raises an error. The API distinguishes this timeout from a page-load timeout: Python WebDriver API.

Run scripts in the intended window or frame
JavaScript executes against the currently selected browsing context. If the script appears to inspect the wrong document or cannot find an element, first check which window and frame WebDriver has selected, then switch context before executing the script. Browser cross-domain policies can also prevent access across origins. The shared WebDriver JavaScript executor API describes the execution context and cross-domain caveat: JavascriptExecutor API.
Use script-level actions deliberately
JavaScript can change page state or trigger actions without following the same interaction path as a user clicking or typing through Selenium’s element APIs. If the test is meant to verify normal user interaction, prefer Selenium’s ordinary element interactions. Use JavaScript when the test specifically needs script-level behavior or when reading page state directly.

Troubleshoot common failures
- Python receives
Noneor no useful result: add a JavaScriptreturnstatement for synchronous execution, or pass a value to the callback for asynchronous execution. - The script targets the wrong page: verify the active window and frame, and switch to the intended context before calling the script.
- An element or property is missing: confirm the locator resolves in the selected document and that the script uses the intended element argument.
- Values change the meaning of the script: do not concatenate variable or untrusted text into the JavaScript source. Pass values after the script and reference them through
arguments[n]. - An asynchronous call times out: confirm the callback is called on every completion path and raise
set_script_timeout(seconds)only as much as the expected operation requires. This timeout governs the async script, not page loading. - Execution fails across frames or origins: select the correct frame and account for browser cross-domain access restrictions.
- The script has no effect or throws a syntax error: check the JavaScript syntax and inspect the browser’s developer console for page-side errors.
