Cross-Browser Accessibility Testing: What to Check

A practical guide to choosing browser and assistive-technology combinations, checking key accessibility workflows, and understanding where automation stops.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test accessibility in the browsers, platforms, and assistive technologies your audience actually uses—not just in one browser or an automated scan. For each supported environment, check keyboard operation, focus, semantic names and structure, text alternatives, contrast, dynamic content, and complete user workflows. Pair repeatable automated checks with manual evaluation and, where possible, usability testing with disabled people.

Choose a test matrix that reflects your users

There is no universally sufficient browser-and-assistive-technology matrix or required number of screen readers. W3C guidance explains that accessibility depends on how assistive technologies interoperate with content and on the support available in user agents. Start with your audience, supported platforms, and the ways people use assistive technology.

For each combination you plan to support, record:

  • Browser or other user agent, platform, and version.
  • Assistive technology, its version and platform, and the way it is being used.
  • The page or workflow tested, the steps taken, and the expected and observed results.
  • Any known limitation or reproducible issue.

Keep these records current. Browser and assistive-technology behavior changes, and W3C technique support notes can become outdated. Check compatibility in your current target environments rather than treating an older technique note as a permanent guarantee. See W3C accessibility support documentation and W3C conformance guidance.

What to check in each environment

Use the same important tasks across your chosen combinations so that results are comparable. These checks are a practical starting point, not a substitute for evaluating applicable WCAG success criteria.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Keyboard operation and focus

  • Complete the main task using the keyboard, including Tab and the appropriate activation keys.
  • Confirm every interactive control can be reached and operated, and that focus is visible and moves in a sensible order.
  • Try menus, dialogs, forms, and other complex controls in the states users actually encounter.

Structure, names, and text alternatives

  • Check that headings, landmarks, lists, and other content use meaningful structure.
  • Verify that controls and form fields have names or labels assistive technology can identify.
  • Check that images and other non-text content have useful alternatives where needed.

Contrast and visual readability

Use a contrast-checking tool, then inspect the rendered page in the target environment. Automated checks can flag some contrast problems, but they do not establish that all content is readable in context.

Hidden, dynamic, and interactive content

  • Make sure content hidden visually or revealed by interaction is exposed appropriately to assistive technology.
  • Trigger updates and status changes and verify that users can perceive them.
  • Check that overlays, popups, and changing content do not obstruct or strand keyboard users.

CSS, JavaScript, and complete tasks

Check whether content still makes sense with CSS disabled, and whether critical functions depend on JavaScript in ways that fail in a target environment. Test end-to-end tasks—such as booking or purchasing—rather than inspecting isolated controls alone. Ask users where complex controls or workflows are difficult to use. MDN’s accessibility tooling and assistive technology guidance provides practical checks and user-testing suggestions.

Combine automation with human evaluation

Automated accessibility checks are useful for repeatable testing and detectable issues. Playwright’s accessibility guidance gives examples such as poor contrast, unlabeled controls, and duplicate IDs. But many accessibility problems require human evaluation, including whether a real workflow makes sense and works with the assistive technology people use. W3C puts it plainly: “Testing the success criteria would involve a combination of automated testing and human evaluation.”

Use automation to catch issues consistently, then manually operate key workflows in the target combinations. Include usability testing with disabled people where possible; W3C recommends usability testing in addition to functional testing and recommends including users with disabilities in test groups. An automated pass is evidence only about the rules the tool can detect—not proof that every user can complete every task.
