Common Screen Sizes for Responsive Web Design

Common screen resolutions make useful responsive test cases, but there is no universal breakpoint list. Choose CSS breakpoints by viewport width and content fit.

There is no mandatory list of screen sizes every responsive website must target. Build a layout that adapts to the available browser viewport, then add CSS breakpoints wherever the content no longer fits well. Popular screen resolutions are useful test cases—not breakpoint values.

Screen resolution is not the same as CSS viewport width

A resolution such as 1920×1080 describes physical display pixels. CSS layout and media queries generally work with the browser’s viewport in CSS pixels. High-density screens can map multiple physical pixels to one CSS pixel, and browser zoom and configuration can change the effective viewport. On mobile, the content area is not necessarily as wide as the physical screen.

The viewport meta element helps mobile browsers use the device width in CSS pixels as the layout viewport. Without it, a browser may use a wider virtual viewport and shrink the page, so narrow-width media queries do not behave as intended. Use <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1"> in the document’s <head>. See MDN’s viewport meta tag guide and its media query guide.

Common screen resolutions to use as test cases

Statcounter Global Stats reported the following worldwide screen-resolution shares for September 2026. These are reported resolution categories, not a census of installed devices or recommended CSS viewport widths. Combined-platform percentages mix devices and are not shares of desktop or mobile users individually.

Choose breakpoints from the layout, not a device checklist

A media query tests the viewport and other environment features; it does not ask whether someone is using a particular phone or monitor. Choose a breakpoint when the current arrangement begins to fail: for example, when navigation no longer fits, a text column becomes uncomfortably wide or narrow, cards become cramped, or a form overflows. As web.dev puts it, “It’s best to choose your breakpoints based on your content rather than popular device sizes, as those are subject to change with every technology release cycle.” Read web.dev’s media queries guide.

  • In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
  • Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.

Start with a simple, narrow-screen layout, then add layout changes as needed. Keep dimensions fluid between those changes: flexible grids, relative units, and minimum or maximum values can handle many widths without additional media queries. MDN recommends relative units for breakpoints rather than fixed device widths; see Using media queries.

A practical responsive testing workflow

  1. Set the viewport meta element. Add <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1"> to the page head before assessing mobile behavior.
  2. Test representative starting widths. Use the common resolutions above to choose devices or browser viewport sizes to inspect. When using a browser emulator, set the viewport in CSS pixels rather than entering a physical display resolution as if it were a CSS width.
  3. Check the layout between those widths. Resize continuously across the intervals, not just at the endpoints. Look for horizontal overflow, awkward wrapping, excessive line lengths, cramped controls, and sudden jumps in layout.
  4. Set or adjust a breakpoint only when the content needs it. For each change, identify the specific failure it fixes—such as collapsing navigation or changing a card grid from multiple columns to one.
  5. Check orientation and interaction. Verify that the layout remains usable in portrait and landscape, and that touch targets and expanded or collapsed navigation work at narrow widths.

Firefox Responsive Design Mode is one way to explore viewport widths in a browser; see MDN’s Responsive Design Mode guide.

To capture a page at a chosen viewport, call ScreenshotNeo’s screenshot API. Change the URL in this cURL example to the page you want to inspect; the example saves a WebP image. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use the take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Every feature is available on every plan. For browser-based responsive testing, still inspect viewport widths and interactions directly.
