How to Improve Website Performance and Page Load Times

A practical, evidence-led guide to diagnosing slow pages and improving loading, responsiveness, and visual stability without guessing at the fix.

To make a website faster, first find which real-user metric and page segment are slow, then use a repeatable browser trace to locate the bottleneck, change that specific part, and measure again. A large image, slow server, late-discovered resource, blocked rendering, heavy JavaScript, and layout shifts need different fixes; installing a cache plugin or compressing every image is not a diagnosis.

Measure the experience before changing the site

Start with field data: observations from real visits. In PageSpeed Insights, inspect the affected URL if it has enough Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) coverage. Check whether the result is for that URL or the broader origin, and assess mobile and desktop separately at the 75th percentile. That percentile represents the experience threshold for most visits, not a promise that every visitor will meet it.

Then compare field data with a controlled Lighthouse run or a Chrome DevTools performance trace. Field and lab results can differ because of redirects, network latency, cache state, user-specific content, screen size, interactions, and the test location or device. When Lighthouse and CrUX disagree, field data is generally the better guide to visitors’ actual experience. Lighthouse is still useful for repeatable diagnosis and pre-release checks. Google’s Core Web Vitals guidance explains field assessment and thresholds.

For the affected page, capture a network waterfall and performance trace. Identify the failing metric, the device segment, and the work happening before the delay. Change one relevant cause at a time and remeasure; an optimization to one part of a load can expose a different part as the new bottleneck.

Current Core Web Vitals targets

Metric What it describes Good threshold
LCP Loading: when the largest visible image or text block renders 2.5 seconds or less
INP Responsiveness across user interactions 200 milliseconds or less
CLS Visual stability: unexpected movement of page content 0.1 or less

Google evaluates these thresholds at the 75th percentile, separately for mobile and desktop. The current threshold methodology was updated on May 7, 2025. See Google’s threshold definitions and methodology.

How to improve a slow LCP

A poor Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) score does not automatically mean the image is too large. Find the LCP element, then separate its timeline into four parts. Google’s LCP guidance recommends an LCP of 2.5 seconds or less for at least 75% of page visits. Google’s LCP guide describes how to inspect these parts.

1. Time to first byte (TTFB)

TTFB is the time until the browser receives the first byte of the HTML response. Redirect chains, a distant origin server, poor network conditions, or cache misses can delay it. If the trace shows a long wait before HTML arrives, investigate those causes: reduce unnecessary redirects, review origin response time and caching behavior, and consider CDN delivery when origin distance is the diagnosed issue. A CDN will not fix time spent rendering or executing JavaScript.

2. Resource-load delay

This is the time between the first byte and the browser discovering and starting to fetch the LCP resource. If an important image is inserted by JavaScript, concealed in a CSS background without an early preload, or marked for lazy loading, the browser may discover it too late. Keep the resource URL in the initial HTML where possible, and do not lazy-load the LCP image. Use preload or fetchpriority="high" selectively for the likely LCP resource; raising priority on many images can make them compete with each other.

3. Resource-load duration

This is the time spent transferring the LCP resource. Check its actual dimensions, format, and file size, and see whether other requests are competing for bandwidth. Resize or compress the resource when its transfer is the measured bottleneck; do not assume image compression will help if the trace instead shows a late discovery or delayed rendering.

4. Element-render delay

This is the time between the resource becoming ready and the element appearing on screen. Render-blocking stylesheets or scripts, long main-thread tasks, and code that hides or reveals content late can hold up the paint. Remove unused CSS and JavaScript, defer noncritical work, and avoid unnecessary synchronous scripts in the document head. Confirm in the trace that the change shortened the render delay.

How to improve slow interactions (INP)

Interaction to Next Paint (INP) measures responsiveness across interactions, not just the initial load. A good INP is 200 milliseconds or less at the 75th percentile. Lighthouse does not directly measure INP: it reports Total Blocking Time (TBT) as a lab clue, not a substitute for field INP. Use real-user data to establish the interaction problem, then use DevTools to find the work occupying the main thread.

Look for unnecessary JavaScript, heavy startup work, and long tasks. Google’s responsiveness guidance classifies a task longer than 50 milliseconds as a long task and recommends reducing unused code, splitting code that is not required for initial rendering, and breaking up work so the browser can handle interaction and rendering sooner. Read Google’s guidance on optimizing long tasks.

How to reduce unexpected layout shifts (CLS)

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) measures visual stability; a good value is 0.1 or less at the 75th percentile. Shifts can happen after the initial load, so a page-load-only lab run may miss problems seen in field data. Inspect real-user observations and check images, embeds, ads, and dynamically inserted content. Reserve space for content when its dimensions are known, then verify the page through the full visit rather than only its first paint. Google classifies CLS above 0.25 as poor under its current thresholds: threshold definitions.

Prioritize fixes by evidence and effort

Choose work using the failing metric and its severity, field-versus-lab behavior, mobile-versus-desktop results, the diagnosed bottleneck, likely user impact, and implementation effort. A theoretically large optimization may be impractical or irrelevant to the observed problem; favor a change that addresses measured experience and the team can implement safely.

  • If HTML arrives late, investigate redirects, origin performance, caching, and geography before changing front-end assets.
  • If the LCP resource starts late, make it discoverable earlier and review lazy loading and priority.
  • If the resource takes too long to transfer, inspect its size and competing requests.
  • If the resource is ready but the page still waits to paint, inspect blocking CSS, scripts, and main-thread work.
  • If interactions are slow, profile JavaScript and break up long tasks.
  • If content moves, reserve layout space and check for shifts throughout the visit.

Caching policies can shorten repeat resource loads, but neither caching nor a CDN is a universal fix. A change may improve one LCP subpart without improving total LCP if another subpart becomes dominant.

Common performance troubleshooting mistakes

The lab score improved but visitors still report slowness

Check whether field data improved for the same URL or origin and device segment. A lab run is controlled; visitors may have different connections, cache states, screens, content, and interactions. For interaction issues, remember that Lighthouse’s TBT is not field INP.

LCP is poor, but compressing the image changes little

Inspect the four LCP timing parts. If resource-load delay or element-render delay dominates, transfer compression will not address the main cause. Recheck the timing after each targeted fix because the dominant part can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A CDN or cache change does not improve the page

Use the trace to verify whether TTFB or repeat resource transfer was actually responsible. If the main delay is resource discovery, rendering, interaction work, or layout instability, focus there instead.

The page looks stable in Lighthouse but shifts for visitors

Field visits can reveal shifts occurring after initial load. Inspect the full visit and identify images, embeds, ads, or inserted content that changes layout; reserve space where dimensions are known.
