How to Commercialize Open-Source Software

Open-source software can be commercial. Compare practical revenue models and learn how license terms, distribution, hosting, and contribution rights affect them.

Yes—you can make money from open-source software. Open source permits commercial use, but it does not automatically let a seller restrict recipients’ rights or claim exclusive control over code released under an open-source license. The right revenue model depends on what customers value, how you deliver the software, the exact license, and whether you have the rights needed to offer the proposed terms.

What commercializing open-source software means

“Open source” describes licensing and rights, not a ban on charging. The Open Source Initiative says commercial use is allowed under the Open Source Definition, and a company may sell open-source programs. What the seller can require of a customer who receives a copy depends on the applicable license. Commercial permission does not itself authorize extra restrictions on downstream recipients. The OSI FAQ, last modified January 21, 2025, explains both points.

That distinction shapes the business: charge for the software where the license and distribution arrangement permit it, or charge for services, operations, separately licensed additions, assurances, or brand permissions. Selling a copy does not turn its open-source license into an exclusive royalty right.

How open-source businesses make money

Choose a model that charges for value customers actually need. These approaches can be combined, but each sells something different:

Model What customers pay for Key consideration
Hosted or managed service Deployment, operation, convenience, availability, and sometimes support Network use can raise license questions; review the terms, particularly for AGPL-licensed software. GNU AGPL information.
Support and maintenance Response commitments, fixes, upgrades, and access to expertise Make clear that the fee is for service, not exclusive rights to the open-source code. The OSI describes selling services based on the code. OSI FAQ.
Consulting and customization Implementation, integration, tailored development, or training Revenue depends on the work and delivery capacity, rather than automatically on software adoption. ETH Zurich Technology Transfer.
Open-core Proprietary extensions or features alongside an open-source core State which parts are open source and which are proprietary; preserve the announced license for the open portion. Bitkom Open Source Guide.
Dual licensing A commercial license offering different permissions for the same or substantially similar code You need the right to grant the commercial license for every relevant contribution. ETH Zurich Technology Transfer.
Warranties, assurances, or trademark licensing Risk reduction, assurances, or permission to use a mark These arrangements do not, by themselves, change the software’s license. OSI FAQ.

The GNU Project similarly notes that excluding commercial use would hinder the free-software community. GNU: What is Free Software? That principle is compatible with businesses charging for expertise, operations, or other distinct value.

Open-core versus dual licensing

Open-core: open software plus proprietary additions

In an open-core model, the project’s core is released under an open-source license, while additional features or a paid tier are proprietary. The customer is paying for the additions or package, not for a newly exclusive claim over the open core. Define the boundary clearly so users can tell what remains available under the open license. Bitkom’s Open Source Guide discusses open-source business models.

Dual licensing: alternative terms for the same code

Dual licensing offers the same or substantially similar code under more than one license, commonly an open-source license and a commercial license. A customer may choose the commercial terms when they need permissions or conditions different from those in the open-source option. This model depends on the licensor having authority to grant both sets of terms for the code in question; contribution ownership and agreements must be checked. ETH Zurich Technology Transfer.

How distribution and license terms affect the model

When you distribute copies

GPL-family licenses permit commercial charging while preserving recipients’ rights under the license. The precise obligations depend on the license and version and on what you distribute. For example, the Free Software Foundation explains that GPLv3 installation-information obligations do not require a vendor to provide a support service. Read the actual license and the relevant guidance rather than treating “GPL” as one uniform set of requirements. GNU GPL FAQ.

The Apache Software Foundation says it does not distinguish between personal, internal, and commercial use of its projects. That does not remove the need to comply with the license’s terms when using or distributing a specific project. Apache Licensing and Distribution FAQ.

When you offer software over a network

Do not assume hosting avoids all license obligations. The GNU AGPL was designed for network-server software and addresses cooperation with users of modified versions under its terms. Whether a particular service triggers particular duties depends on the license and how the software is used; review the exact text and implementation. GNU AGPL information.

When you use third-party code or accept contributions

Check more than the main repository’s license. Dependencies, documentation, and assets may have separate terms. For dual licensing, also verify that the business can license every relevant contribution on the proposed commercial terms. A project’s public license alone does not establish that one company owns all contributions or can relicense them.

Before launching: a licensing and ownership checklist

  1. Inventory the code and assets. Identify the exact license and version for the project, plus separate licenses for dependencies, documentation, and other assets.
  2. Map how customers receive or use it. Distinguish distributing copies from operating a network service, or doing both; obligations can depend on the activity and license.
  3. Check the proposed revenue model against those terms. In particular, review network-service implications for AGPL software and redistribution obligations for the license you use.
  4. Verify rights for commercial licensing. If offering dual licensing, establish that your organization can license each relevant contribution under the alternative terms.
  5. Explain the boundary to customers and contributors. Make explicit what remains open source, what is proprietary or separately licensed, and what a service or assurance fee covers.
  6. Get project-specific advice where needed. General license guidance cannot settle the legal position of an individual codebase; review its license texts and contribution history with qualified counsel when the stakes warrant it.

If you are documenting or monitoring an open-source project and need clean website captures, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture flow accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers identifying the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

For a basic capture, save the response body as an image file:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://opensource.org/faq -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.

Does dual licensing let me relicense every open-source project?

No. You need the rights to grant the proposed alternative license for the code and contributions involved.

Is there one proven most profitable open-source business model?

The cited licensing and model guidance does not establish a universal revenue winner; fit depends on customer value, delivery costs, and rights.
