Save the current window handle, wait for the new tab to open, find the handle that was not there before, then switch to it with driver.switch_to.window(handle). Selenium uses the same window-handle mechanism for browser tabs and windows. The key is to wait for the new browsing context before reading the handles.
Switch to a tab opened by a click
This Selenium 4 example assumes the page has a link whose visible text is Open new window and that clicking it opens exactly one additional tab or window. Update the locator and expected count to match your page.

driver.quit()driver.current_window_handle identifies the selected context; driver.window_handles lists the open contexts. A click that opens a tab does not automatically switch WebDriver into it. The explicit switch is what makes subsequent commands operate on the new tab. Selenium’s official example uses this wait-and-set-difference pattern: Working with windows and tabs.
If more than one context may open
The example waits for exactly two contexts because it starts with one and expects one new one. If your action can open multiple contexts, wait for the count you expect, or wait for a new context relative to the original set, then calculate the difference:

print(driver.title)Use a count condition when the expected total is known. Use new_window_is_opened when the important condition is that at least one context beyond the original set has appeared. Selenium documents both conditions in its Python expected-conditions API.
Create a new tab from the test
If the test—not the page—should create the tab, Selenium 4 and later provide driver.switch_to.new_window("tab"). This creates a tab and switches into it; it is not the same as selecting a tab that a page has already opened.

Close a tab and return to the original
Keep the original handle before switching. After closing the currently selected tab, switch explicitly to a handle that remains open before issuing more browser commands.

driver.close() # Closes only the currently selected tab or window.
driver.switch_to.window(original_window)
print(driver.title)driver.close() closes the selected context. driver.quit() ends the WebDriver session and closes all its contexts. Commands sent while WebDriver still targets a context that has been closed can raise a No Such Window exception. See Selenium’s guidance on browser windows and handles.

- The new handle is missing: the page may open the context asynchronously. Wait for the expected handle count or for
new_window_is_openedbefore readingdriver.window_handles. - The test switches to the wrong tab: do not assume the new tab is at a fixed list index. Save the original handle and select the handle found by set difference.
- The count wait times out: verify that the click actually opens a new browsing context and that the expected total is correct. A blocked popup or a page that reuses the current tab will not produce another handle.
- No Such Window exception after closing: the selected context has been closed. Switch to a still-open handle before continuing; use
quit()only when ending the entire session.

Behavior across every browser, driver, and remote execution setup is not established here; investigate configuration-specific failures in the relevant driver environment.
