In Selenium WebDriver for Java, cast your driver to JavascriptExecutor and call executeScript for JavaScript that completes immediately. Use executeAsyncScript when the script must signal completion through Selenium’s callback. Both run in the currently selected frame or window, and asynchronous execution needs an appropriate script timeout.
What is JavaScriptExecutor?
JavascriptExecutor is a Selenium Java interface for drivers that can execute JavaScript. Selenium’s Java API documentation describes it as a mechanism for executing JavaScript in the browser. Drivers including ChromeDriver, ChromiumDriver, EdgeDriver, FirefoxDriver, InternetExplorerDriver, RemoteWebDriver, and SafariDriver implement the interface.
It is useful when a test needs to run a browser-side script or retrieve a value from the page. Prefer WebDriver’s normal element interactions when they express the user action you want to test; a JavaScript click is an available technique, not a universal substitute for a user-like interaction.
How do I use JavascriptExecutor in Selenium?
Cast the existing WebDriver instance to JavascriptExecutor, then pass JavaScript and, optionally, arguments:

The first call clicks it in the page; the second returns its innerText for assignment to a Java String. The pattern is shown in Selenium’s WebDriver interaction documentation.
Pass arguments instead of building script strings
Supply values after the script string and refer to them by their position in arguments. Supported inputs include primitive values, WebElement objects, and lists of supported values. Passing a value this way keeps it distinct from the JavaScript source and is especially helpful when working with elements or variable data.

Return a value from executeScript
Use JavaScript’s return statement to provide a result. Selenium converts returned values across the WebDriver boundary: HTML elements become WebElement objects, and numbers, booleans, strings, lists, and maps become corresponding Java values. A missing or explicit null result is returned as null. Cast or assign the result to the Java type appropriate to the value you expect.

For asynchronous work, retrieve Selenium’s injected callback from the final argument and call it when the operation is complete. For example:

);The example uses Java’s Duration style; the precise timeout method signature can vary by Selenium release. Check the API documentation for the Selenium version installed in your project. If the callback is never called, execution cannot complete normally and may hit the configured timeout.
Which frame or window executes the script?
Scripts run in the currently selected browsing context, meaning the selected frame or window. They do not automatically execute in an arbitrary iframe. Switch to the target frame with WebDriver before invoking JavaScript; inside the script, document refers to that selected context’s document.

- The script cannot find the intended element: Confirm that WebDriver has selected the correct frame or window and that the element is present in that context before executing the script.
- An asynchronous call times out: Ensure the script calls Selenium’s injected callback on every completion path, and configure a script timeout appropriate to the operation before calling
executeAsyncScript. - A script involving another frame or an XHR request fails: Browser cross-domain policies can restrict access. Selenium warns that these failures may not produce clear error messages; inspect the browser console and confirm the script is permitted to access the relevant origin.
- The returned Java value has an unexpected type: Check the JavaScript return expression and the documented WebDriver conversions. An absent return value or JavaScript null yields Java
null. - A JavaScript click passes but the real interaction does not: A script-driven click does not establish that a user could interact with the element in the same way. Use WebDriver’s regular interaction methods when validating user-facing behavior.
For release-specific method signatures and behavior, consult the API documentation corresponding to your installed Selenium version; the general API reference does not establish a complete version-by-version browser compatibility matrix. Selenium’s WebDriver overview also describes WebDriver BiDi for bidirectional browser events such as network requests, console messages, and JavaScript errors. That event-oriented capability is distinct from injecting a snippet through JavascriptExecutor.
