BrowserStack’s IntelliJ and Eclipse SDK plugins help connect an existing Java test project to BrowserStack Automate. Install the plugin in your IDE, run its project integration action, select the framework and provide the required parameters. In the documented workflows, this adds the browserstack-java-sdk dependency and creates a browserstack.yml file; review both before running tests.
What the BrowserStack SDK IDE plugins do
BrowserStack announced IDE plugins for IntelliJ and Eclipse on June 20, 2023, describing them as a way to integrate BrowserStack SDK with Java-based test suites. The current Automate integration guides continue to document these IDE flows for specific frameworks, including TestNG and Selenide. The plugin assists with project setup; it does not replace the framework-specific integration guide or make every Java project configuration interchangeable.
BrowserStack describes its SDK as integrating with a test suite at runtime. Its documented capabilities include cross-browser or cross-platform execution, parallelization, and Local Testing for applications in development or staging environments. These are vendor-described capabilities, and the exact setup depends on the framework and build tool.
Before you install
- Have an existing Java automated test project open in the IDE.
- Identify your test framework and build tool, such as Maven or Gradle. Follow the matching BrowserStack integration guide rather than copying dependency instructions from a different framework.
- Confirm that you intend to configure the project for the relevant BrowserStack workflow, such as Automate. BrowserStack’s integration pages describe specific service and framework combinations.
- Have your BrowserStack username and access key available for the configuration fields. Treat credentials as secrets: do not commit a real key to source control or paste one into public examples.
Install and integrate in IntelliJ IDEA
- Open Preferences on macOS or Settings on other platforms, then select Plugins. Menu wording and placement can vary by IntelliJ IDEA version.
- Search for the BrowserStack plugin in the plugin marketplace, install it, and restart the IDE if prompted.
- Open the Java project you want to configure. From the project context menu, choose the BrowserStack integration action.
- Select the project and test framework, then enter the requested BrowserStack parameters. Follow the relevant framework guide for project-specific requirements.
- Inspect the generated project changes. In the documented integration path, the plugin adds the
browserstack-java-sdkdependency to a Maven project and generatesbrowserstack.yml.
Install and integrate in Eclipse
- In Eclipse, open Help → Eclipse Marketplace. Search for BrowserStack, install the plugin, and restart Eclipse if prompted.
- Open the Java project to integrate and use its context menu to start the BrowserStack integration action.
- Select the project and framework, and supply the parameters requested by the integration flow.
- Review the resulting dependency and
browserstack.yml. The documented plugin flow adds the SDK dependency and creates the YAML configuration for the selected integration.
Review the generated configuration before running
Treat plugin-generated files as a starting point, not as proof that every setting matches your project. Check the dependency against your build system and framework guide, confirm the framework value and platform capabilities, and verify project or build labels. Keep credentials in the secure configuration mechanism appropriate to your environment rather than hard-coding a real access key into a committed file.

BrowserStack documents browserstack.yml as the SDK configuration location. For a capability present both in the test script and in the YAML file, BrowserStack says the YAML value takes precedence. Check this precedence when a run behaves differently from a capability set in code.
Run the suite and choose the matching guide
For the documented workflows, BrowserStack says tests can then be run as usual. Use the integration guide for the exact framework and build tool in your project; dependency snippets and SDK details differ by framework and whether the project uses Maven or Gradle. For example, the official TestNG integration guide and Selenide integration guide document their respective paths.

Troubleshooting common setup problems
The plugin does not appear in the marketplace
Check that you are searching in the right IDE marketplace and that the IDE version supports the plugin listing. Menu labels and marketplace presentation can vary by IDE version. If the plugin is unavailable in your environment, use the matching BrowserStack framework guide to integrate the SDK without relying on the IDE flow.
The integration action or framework is missing
Verify that the intended Java project is open and select the framework matching the test suite. The plugin examples do not establish support for every framework or build configuration; consult the relevant BrowserStack guide before applying its steps to a different project type.

The build cannot resolve the SDK dependency
Inspect the generated dependency and compare it with the matching Maven or Gradle instructions for your framework. Do not assume a dependency snippet for one build tool applies unchanged to another.
Tests run with unexpected capabilities
Review browserstack.yml for the selected platforms and other capabilities. If the same capability is also set in the test script, the YAML value takes precedence according to BrowserStack’s SDK documentation.

Credentials are rejected or exposed
Recheck the username and access key supplied to the configuration, and rotate a key if it has been committed or shared publicly. The integration examples use placeholders; they do not establish that it is safe to place a real key in a particular file.

The Java SDK plugins described here are not the same as BrowserStack’s VS Code integration for Live, which launches Live browser sessions from VS Code. BrowserStack Test Companion is also a separate product with its own installation guide and IDE coverage. Choose the workflow that matches the BrowserStack service and task, rather than installing a similarly named extension for a different purpose.
