To get started with automated browser testing, choose a framework that fits your language and browser needs, install its runner and browser dependencies, then automate one important user journey and run it locally before adding it to CI. For a JavaScript or TypeScript project, Playwright Test is a practical starting point when its integrated runner and multi-engine support fit your workflow; Selenium and Cypress are also strong options for different team needs. No framework is the right choice for every project.
Choose a framework for your project
Before installing anything, note your project language, the browsers your users rely on, how tests will run in CI, and whether your team already has an automation framework. The setup and browser coverage differ among the main options.
| Framework | Setup model | Language and browser considerations | Scaling path |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright Test | Install the test runner, then use its CLI to install version-matched browser binaries. | A direct fit for JavaScript and TypeScript teams. The reviewed documentation covers Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit; branded Chrome and Edge can also be used. See Playwright browser documentation. | Parallel workers and sharding. |
| Selenium WebDriver | Install a language binding and browser. WebDriver controls the browser, and a driver communicates with it; Selenium Manager handles driver management by default in supported bindings. | Consider it when language-neutral WebDriver support, broad browser and platform reach, or an existing Selenium estate matters. See Selenium documentation. | Selenium Grid for distributed execution. Selenium IDE is an optional record-and-playback entry point. |
| Cypress | Use the Cypress runner, configure the application, and run tests in a supported browser. | JavaScript-oriented E2E workflow. Its current browser guidance covers Chrome-family browsers and Firefox; WebKit is experimental. Chrome for Testing is recommended when a pinned, reproducible Chrome binary is desired. See Cypress browser guidance. | Use its CI and cross-browser workflows as the suite grows. |
Choose based on language, browser targets, CI, and maintenance needs—not a popularity chart or a claim that one tool is universally best. Selenium’s project guidance puts it plainly: “No one approach works for all situations.” See Selenium test practices.

Example: a Playwright sign-in test
Save this as tests/sign-in.spec.js. It assumes the application is already running at http://127.0.0.1:3000 and has a sign-in page with accessible labels and a heading named “Account”. Replace the URL, labels, and expected heading with those of your own application.
const { test, expect } = require('@playwright/test');
test('a user can sign in', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://127.0.0.1:3000/sign-in');
await page.getByLabel('Email').fill('[email protected]');
await page.getByLabel('Password').fill('test-password');
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Sign in' }).click();
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Account' })).toBeVisible();
});
Run it with npx playwright test tests/sign-in.spec.js. Playwright’s locator actions wait for actionability, and its assertions retry while checking the expected state; that is usually more reliable than inserting arbitrary delays. The sample credentials must work in your test environment, not against a live account.

Make the test resilient and independent
- Prefer accessible role and name locators, such as
getByRoleandgetByLabel, or an explicit test contract maintained by the application team. - Assert visible outcomes, not incidental CSS classes, element positions, private function names, or data structures. Playwright’s best-practices guide recommends testing end-user behavior rather than implementation details.
- Give each test its own relevant cookies, storage, session, and records. Create or reset test data as part of setup instead of depending on another test to sign in or create an account first.
- Wait for meaningful application state—such as a visible confirmation or account heading—instead of sleeping for a fixed number of seconds.
Run locally, then add CI and broader coverage
- Run the test locally in the browser you selected and confirm that its prerequisites and data setup are explicit.
- Once it passes reliably, add it to CI on commits or pull requests. Keep the browser build and framework versions controlled enough to make failures reproducible.
- Begin with one browser, then add engines, viewports, or device profiles that matter to your users. Install only what the current CI run needs.
- As the suite grows, consider parallel workers or sharding only when runtime warrants it and tests are independent. Preserve traces, screenshots, or video when the tool supports them so failures are easier to diagnose.
Add tests for critical user journeys and defects that have escaped before. Browser tests are most useful for user-visible behavior that lower-level tests cannot adequately verify; they bring maintenance and test-data responsibilities whichever framework you choose.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common first-test failures and fixes
- The browser binary is missing or mismatched: For Playwright, run
npx playwright installafter installing or updating the package, and ensure CI has the required system dependencies. Its browser binaries are version-matched to the Playwright release. - A click or assertion times out: Check that the app is running at the expected address, the test account and data exist, and the locator matches a visible, actionable element. Prefer waiting for the meaningful state over adding a fixed sleep.
- A selector breaks after a redesign: Replace selectors tied to styling or DOM structure with a role/name, label, or explicit test contract that reflects the intended interaction.
- The test passes alone but fails in the suite: Look for shared cookies, storage, accounts, or mutable records. Reset or isolate them so one test cannot silently determine another’s result.
- CI behaves differently from a developer’s machine: Compare framework and browser versions, environment variables, app startup, and system dependencies. Pin dependencies with the lockfile and use a controlled browser build where automatic browser updates cause drift.
- The suite is slow or costly to run: Start by installing only the browser needed for the current checks. Add parallelism or sharding after the tests are stable and runtime justifies the extra execution complexity.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a page screenshot rather than exercise and assert an interactive user journey, ScreenshotNeo is a separate option: a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its one-call API can capture a page without setting up browser automation in your project. This does not replace an end-to-end test that clicks through a flow and checks the outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I start browser testing without writing every test by hand?
Selenium IDE is an optional record-and-playback entry point, but review recorded selectors, assertions, and data setup before relying on a test.
Should I run every browser in CI from the beginning?
No. Start with the browser your first test needs, then add engines and profiles based on the browsers your users rely on.
