To add visual regression testing to WebdriverIO, install and register @wdio/visual-service, capture a stable page or component state, and compare later runs with a reviewed baseline. The service supports screen, element, and full-page comparisons; a changed image is a signal to investigate, not automatic proof of a defect.

Set up the WebdriverIO visual service

The documented WebdriverIO route is @wdio/visual-service, installed as a development dependency and registered in the WDIO configuration. The service’s visual testing guide covers the current setup and available capture methods.

  1. Install the package in your project:

    npm install --save-dev @wdio/visual-service
  2. Register the service in your existing wdio.conf.js or equivalent configuration. A minimal configuration shape is:

    export const config = {
      // Keep your existing runner, specs, framework, and browser capabilities.
      services: [
        ['visual', {
          baselineFolder: './visual-baselines/',
        }],
      ],
    };

    Merge the service entry into your project’s existing services array rather than replacing other services. Consult the official guide for the full set of options supported by the package version you install.

    Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
    • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
    • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
    • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  3. Write a test that navigates to a meaningful state, waits for the application to render, and invokes a visual check. The service provides screen, element, and full-page check methods; use the scope that matches what the test is intended to catch.

The visual-test writing guide documents examples for Mocha, Jasmine, and CucumberJS: https://webdriver.io/docs/visual-testing/writing-tests/. Use the syntax for your framework and installed service version. The first check can create a baseline when none exists, so do not combine save and compare methods on that initial run.

Choose what to capture and establish a baseline

Pick a stable, useful UI state

Capture after navigation and after the specific data or interaction relevant to the test has rendered. A screenshot taken too early can record a loading state; one taken while asynchronous content is still changing can produce inconsistent comparisons. Prefer application-specific readiness conditions over assuming that the browser’s general page-load event means every font, image, or data request is finished.

Match scope to the regression you want to detect

  • Screen: useful when the viewport-level appearance is the requirement, including native or mobile contexts where supported by the configured runner.
  • Element: useful for a bounded component whose appearance matters independently of the rest of the page.
  • Full page: useful for broad layout and page-content changes, provided the capture method suits how the page loads content.

Start by running the check and reviewing the generated reference image. Treat that baseline as an approved reference only after inspecting it. On later runs, inspect the comparison output: accept and update the reference when the visual change is intentional; if the cause is unclear, retain the prior baseline and investigate it as a possible regression.

Reduce noisy or inconsistent comparisons

WebdriverIO’s visual-testing options include controls for hiding scrollbars, disabling blinking input carets, and hiding text when the goal is to compare layout rather than text content. These controls change what the test can detect, so apply them only when that trade-off matches the test’s purpose.

Keep the capture environment consistent

  • Use a consistent browser, viewport, and runtime for baseline and comparison runs.
  • Wait for application data and other asynchronous rendering that affects the captured state. The documentation notes that fonts may load after WebdriverIO considers a page loaded.
  • Where timestamps, rotating content, or other variable regions are irrelevant to the assertion, normalize or hide them deliberately rather than repeatedly accepting incidental diffs.

Account for lazy-loaded content

The default desktop full-page approach uses WebDriver BiDi without scrolling. That can miss content whose rendering depends on scrolling. The service also offers a user-based scroll-and-stitch full-page approach, which can help with lazy-loaded images or scroll-triggered content. Choose it when the page’s behavior requires scrolling, and make sure the test reaches the content you intend to compare.

Understand the v10 comparison change

The v10 documentation says @wdio/visual-service changed its comparison engine from ResembleJS to Pixelmatch. The documented implementation uses a perceptual YIQ color model. WebdriverIO warns that mismatch percentages can differ from v9 and earlier, so old thresholds and baselines should not be assumed to transfer unchanged. Review diffs after upgrading and update baselines only where the new output is accepted. For intentional resets, the docs describe using --update-visual-baseline for individual failures or recreating the baseline folder to start over.

Browser and device coverage depends on your runner

The current overview lists desktop Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Microsoft Edge, as well as Appium-mediated Android and iOS emulators, simulators, and real devices, including native and hybrid app contexts. Actual availability depends on the browser, runner, and Appium infrastructure configured for your project; a package feature listing does not mean every project automatically has every environment.

Visual regression checks answer whether rendered appearance changed. They do not replace functional assertions, which check behavior, or accessibility testing, which checks accessibility requirements.

Troubleshoot common visual-test problems

Symptom Likely cause What to do
The first run fails because no baseline exists. The check is establishing its reference image. Inspect the captured image and treat it as the baseline only if it represents the intended UI state. Avoid combining save and compare methods on this first run.
Many screenshots differ after a v10 upgrade. The comparison engine changed from ResembleJS to Pixelmatch, and mismatch percentages can change. Review the resulting diffs and thresholds for the upgraded version; do not mechanically carry over a v9-or-earlier threshold.
Full-page screenshots omit content lower on the page. The default non-scrolling desktop capture may not trigger lazy loading or scroll-based rendering. Use the user-based scroll-and-stitch option for content that requires scrolling, and verify the page has loaded the target content.
Text, images, or layout shift between runs. Capture timing, asynchronous fonts or data, or inconsistent viewport and browser settings may affect rendering. Wait for application-specific readiness, account for font and data loading, and keep the browser and viewport consistent.
Diffs are dominated by blinking cursors, scrollbars, or irrelevant text changes. Those pixels are included even though they may not be part of the visual requirement. Consider the corresponding service options, while preserving text or other pixels that the test is meant to validate.

When a hosted visual-testing service may fit better

The local WebdriverIO service keeps screenshot capture and comparison within the WDIO workflow. Teams that need centralized visual review or a managed cross-browser and device process may also evaluate hosted services. Percy documents a WebdriverIO integration, and Applitools describes checkpoint and baseline review. These are different workflow options, not evidence of feature parity or a neutral pricing comparison.

Compare candidates against your own needs: where screenshots and baselines are stored, supported browsers and devices, parallel execution, handling of noisy regions, fit with CI, data handling, collaboration and approvals, and current pricing and licensing. Those details vary by product and plan.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot artifact rather than a WebdriverIO visual test, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-call website screenshot API. It is not a replacement for baseline comparison or WDIO assertions; it can simplify screenshot capture.
