How to Create a WooCommerce Rewards Program

Configure a WooCommerce loyalty extension, set clear earning and redemption rules, and test the program before launch.

To create a WooCommerce rewards program, choose a loyalty extension, decide how customers earn and redeem points, configure the rules and discount limits, then make those rules visible on product pages, at checkout and in customer accounts. In WooCommerce’s Points and Rewards extension, the main setup area is WooCommerce > Points & Rewards > Settings.

Decide how the program should work

Set the program’s economics and rules before configuring an extension. Points have two separate values to define: how quickly customers earn them and how much discount they receive when redeeming them. The WooCommerce Points and Rewards settings provide separate controls for earning and redemption conversion, along with rounding and a maximum discount.

  • Choose which actions earn points, such as purchases, account signup or a first product review.
  • Set the points earned per eligible purchase and decide whether rates should differ by product or category.
  • Determine the point-to-currency redemption value, any minimum redemption threshold and the maximum discount allowed.
  • Define exclusions and how the program handles refunds or cancelled orders.

Make the monetary value and restrictions easy to understand. For example, explain how many points a purchase earns and what discount a stated points balance can provide; do not rely on customers to infer the conversion.

Choose a WooCommerce loyalty extension

WooCommerce’s Points and Rewards documentation covers purchase-based earning, product and category rules, discount conversion and limits, signup and first-review rewards, and customer-facing point information. Other documented options include Loyalty Press and WPGens Points and Rewards.

Option Documented capabilities What to verify before choosing
WooCommerce Points and Rewards Purchase points; global and product/category earning rules; redemption conversion and maximum discount; signup and first-review rewards; product, cart, checkout and account displays. Current price, compatibility, support, migration and data-export options.
Loyalty Press Purchase and engagement rewards, referral and review actions, and redemption for discounts or products. Current price, compatibility, support, migration and data-export options.
WPGens Points and Rewards Rewards for registration, orders, referrals, reviews, social follows and birthdays; checkout redemption and coupon options including fixed-cart, percentage, product discounts and free shipping. Current price, compatibility, support, migration and data-export options.

Compare extensions by the earning triggers you need, control over product or category rates, redemption choices and discount ceilings, referral and review integrations, and how clearly they show points to customers. The documented features above do not establish current pricing, support quality or compatibility; check each live product listing and its compatibility information before installing.

Install and configure the program

1. Install and activate the extension

The WooCommerce documentation describes adding Points and Rewards through your WooCommerce account’s “Add to store” or subscriptions workflow. Follow the installation method for the extension you choose, then open WooCommerce > Points & Rewards > Settings for the documented WooCommerce extension.

2. Set purchase earning rules

Choose a global earning rate as the baseline. If margins or promotions differ across the catalog, use product- or category-level rules where appropriate. Select a rounding mode so that fractional points are handled consistently.

3. Set redemption and its limits

Choose the conversion that determines how much discount redeemed points provide, then set the maximum discount customers can apply. For the documented WooCommerce Points and Rewards extension, WooCommerce coupons must be enabled for customers to redeem points. Explain the value and any limits to shoppers before they reach checkout.

4. Decide whether to reward actions beyond purchases

The documented extension supports rewards for account signup and a customer’s first product review. Referral points can be added through the WooCommerce Referral System integration. Other actions—such as social engagement—depend on the extension and whether the relevant third-party integration supports it.

5. Add customer-facing explanations

Configure the available placements so customers can see the program when it matters: potential points on product pages, a redemption prompt in the cart or checkout, and a points balance or history in My Account. The precise display controls depend on the extension.

Test the rules before launch

Run a controlled test in staging or with a limited set of products and customers. Verify both the customer experience and the resulting points balance for cases such as:

  • A purchase of an eligible product, including a product or category with a different earning rate.
  • A product that should not earn points, if the program has exclusions.
  • Redemption with coupons enabled, including whether the maximum discount is enforced.
  • A refund or cancelled order, to confirm how the store’s chosen extension handles the points adjustment.
  • The earning message on product pages, redemption prompt at cart or checkout, and balance/history in My Account.

These checks help expose rule conflicts or unclear messaging in your own store; behavior can vary with the extension and configuration.

Protect point data and plan for changes

WooCommerce’s Points and Rewards documentation warns that clearing all points or deleting plugin data cannot be undone. Before using a clear or delete option, understand its effect and preserve any records or balances your business needs. Also check what export or migration options an extension offers before building a large customer balance on it.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
